Author C330 vs. 2610

I'm sure everyone here has gone through the "which one to get" phase. I have
narrowed my search down to the C330 or 2610. It will be my first and at my
age) possibly last GPS for my car. I do intend to use it in two different
cars. So the eternal question.....which one and why.
Thanks

2610 no question. You get MapSource so you can plan journeys on the
computer before uploading them to the GPS, a 2GB memory card will hold the
maps for all of Europe or all of North America without having to reload
any whenever you want to go to a different part of the country etc., the
list goes on..!

Another point about the 2610. I really don't trust the suction cup
attachment they use for the c330. I'm sure it works OK most of the time but
at least with the beanbag they give you with the 2610, gravity is your
friend. I had a 2610 and I have a 2720 now. The 2610 had several features
that I miss. They tried to make the 2720 easier to use but it isn't. I had
no difficulty or confusion with the 2610.

I never used a memory card bigger than 256K. . . That covered the whole
east coast and went West as far as I needed to go. If I was planning a trip
of several thousand miles, I'd be tempted to buy the 2Gig card but as it
turned out, I never bought any card at all. I always had a spare from my
camera.

Good luck. Which ever you buy, you'll enjoy the confidence of knowing where
you are going all of the time.

I prefer the C320/330 for a few simple reasons:

1) It is simpler to use. I am computer savvy, but like the 320's
simplicity. My wife is not afraid to use it.

2) It has an internal battery as well as internal speakers. The 2610
does not.

The downsides are that the screen is not very bright which makes it a
bit difficult to see in bright sunlight.

I prefer the 320 over the 330 since the battery lasts longer and an SD
card is more stable and reliable than a hard drive.

When has this been an issue?

In/on a vehicle I don't see how it would be (I move mine back and forth
between car and motorcycle, and sometimes my wife's van).

I just ordered her a Quest however. A) she doesn't need to use it very
often so I couldn't justify the expense of a 2nd 2610 and B) it having a
battery I may just take it hunting (mark the tree stand, where we parked,
kills for the week, etc...).

But back to the original question. As a primary and probably last GPS to
buy, between the 2, definitely the 2610.

I am not very experienced in these things, so take my comments with a
few grains of salt. I do have a fair amount of Street Atlas with
Earthmate experience, however.

I bought a C330, mostly because of the simplicty, as someone also
mentioned. My wife can use it and the touch screen works very well,
whereas Street Atlas drove her crazy.

If you are into planning routes and trips, the C330 is not for you.
Its forte is strictly to get you someplace from where you are now. If
you are lost or just need to get home, it's terrific. I find the audio
excellent - the screen can at times get a bit washed out, but this has
NEVER proved to be a problem.

The suction cup actually works GREAT. It holds extremely well under
any circumstance and is easy to put on. The only drawback is that you
need a fairly flat surface or glass to put it on. Again, this has not
proved to be an issue at all - the C330 fits well on all my 3 cars.
The C330 does come with a glue-down disk if you want it, but that is a
permanent mod, and they say so!

As far as accuracy goes, it's as good as any other using that
database. I find that road coverage in general is excellent, but
occasionally it doesn't have the house numbers 100% accurate - but
usually close.

If you have any specific question, fire away.

You wrote an interesting and I enjoyed reading the answers. I've come to
an interesting conclusion. DD, you can't go wrong. Everyone here thinks
there unit is best. Nobody says I have a "this" and I wish I had a "that."
Frankly, I had a 2610 and loved it. It took me many places and when I got
lost, it was my fault. . . I didn't follow the directions properly. I am
convinced I could say the same thing for the C3X0s. Now I have a 2720. I
don't know for sure, but based on what I've read here, it has much of the
ease of use issues covered in the C3X0s. The buttons are all single
function and everything is handled by menus. My wife uses it with ease, but
heck, she used the 2610, too. Some capability was lost but I've only had my
2720 for a few weeks and those capabilities have not been missed yet. The
screen resolution looks like a computer screen but unlike a laptop in a car,
it is plenty bright most of the time. I will admit it was a little dim in
my friends convertible with the top down but hey. I personally don't own a
convertible so I don't care.

Good Luck,
Get the one that does what you want it to do at the price you like best.

I found the Volume on the C330 not loud enough in the store. It was set all
the way up.

The Magellan was much easier to hear.

In Staples, Gbg. Md.

Do you find that too in actual use?

I find the audio of the C330 very clear and loud, although I have to
admit that I run the volume control at just one notch down from maxmum
or sometimes at maximum. At least in my vehicles (i.e. noise) it's not
an issue.
