Author TOPO map will not offer full install

I getting my 76CS ready for a trip and was installing MapSource TOPO. I was
under the impression it would give me an option to install the whole thing
on my hard drive so I would not have to carry around the discs, but it only
gave me the Typical install option. I have more than enough free hard drive
space (over 30GB). Is there a way to get that full install option?

I believe this still works...Create a folder on your HD and copy the
contents of all the CD's to it. Then run setup from there.

I gave it a try but it did not work. Is this a common problem with the TOPO
software? I also noticed that when it tried to check for the 76CS firmware
version it did not list USB as an available interface, even though that's
how I had the unit hooked up (and it was recognized by WinXP). I did install
the Garmin USB drivers before doing any of this.

There are some registry hacks you can do to deal with this, but I don't
have the details. You might want to search or post a question to
http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showforum=11 if nobody else
answers here.

You may be able to avoid editing the registry by uninstalling Mapsource,
then doing the install from the hard drive. I am not sure about this, but I
might be best to have your CD copies in C:\Garmin. That *might* be more
likely to work than in say the Program Files directory.

I'll tell you how I did it. Be warned you have to edit the registry. Way
back when I found the info you are looking for here.

1. Very important to do this first --> Install Garmin Topo per their
instructions.
2. Copy the entire contents of each topo data CD to a separate
directories. In my case I have a hard drive with letter F. On F drive I
created a folder named "Garmin topo" without the quotes. Inside of this
folder I created four additional folders sans quotes, "Alaska" "Hawaii"
"East" "West" - ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL you write down exactly where you
created these folders. For instance, on my computer it would be -
F:\Garmin topo\East
F:\Garmin topo\West
F:\Garmin topo\Hawaii
F:\Garmin topo\Alaska
Do NOT trust your memory - write it down on paper

3. Now take each data CD and copy entire contents of data into respective
folders. You should have all of Alaska in the Alaska folder and so on.

Here is the spot you edit the registry and don't email me if you screw up
the registry because you are on your own here. Strongly suggest that you
backup the registry BEFORE changing anything.

4. Start button, click Run, type REGEDIT, click OK.
5. Click + sign in front of HKEY LOCAL MACHINE - this will expand the list
6. Go down Software and click + sign in front of Software - this will
expand the list
7. Go down to Garmin and click + sign in front of Garmin - this will
expand the list
8. Go down to MapSource and click + sign in front of MapSource - this will
expand the list
9. Go down to Products and click + sign in front of Products - this will
expand the list
10. Under Products you will four folders named 6, 7, 8, 9.
11. Click + sign in front of folder 6. Now you should see on right side of
screen four pieces of information

(Default) (value not set)
Bmap " C:\Garmin\Topo100USE
.img"
Loc "F:\Garmin topo\East" <---this is on my computer
Tdb " C:\Garmin\topo100USE
.tdb"

You need to change the "Loc" data to reflect where you copied the data CD's
and wrote down the location on paper back in step 2. To change the data in
"Loc", click the mouse on "Loc" and then right click. Select "Modify" on
pop up menu and then type in exactly where the data is. Then click OK.

Do the same for folders 7, 8, 9

I believe that folder 6 always contains East, folder 7 always contains
West, folder 8 always contains Hawaii and folder 9 always contains Alaska.
At least that is the way it is on my desktop, my laptop and my wife's
desktop.

Once you have made the changes, just exit out of regedit. Reboot your
computer. Now start up MapSource Topo and when you need a topo map, the
program will automatically go to the spot you indicated in "Loc" and load
the topo map.

Thanks a LOT, Bob. I have no trouble editing the Registry (have done it many
many times in the past), but I will of course be careful. This is my first
high end Garmin, and so far I have to say that I'm a little disappointed
with the quality of their software productization. Even the basic Mapsource
software that comes with the unit has problems. When I installed it from the
CD it installed fine (I guess), but when I first tried to install it after
copying the contents to the HD (I do this depending on the product), it did
not install the USB driver, and after it installed the basic program it
suddenly asked me to insert disc 1 of the City Select software. Odd, as this
was just the basic package install that you get with the 76CS.

Bob, that worked like a charm! Thanks very much for the instructions. Now, a
more stupid question: does either TOPO or the basic Mapsource program that
comes with the unit require "unlocking"? I ask because I got neither a
coupon nor a 25 character code for either software product.

Sorry I took so long to respond. I live in Northeast USA and in the past
week we have had 17 inches of rain in my small corner of CT. Took no water
in the house but water did a job on my driveway. You don't stop water, at
best you just hope to aim it. Spent the day admiring the gullies the
deluge created. Fortunately the gullies were aimed away from the house.
I'll be on the phone Monday AM ordering gravel and renting the backhoe.

MapSource Topo does not require unlocking nor 25 character code. I may be
wrong with following but only time Garmin requires unlocking & 25 character
code is when they are selling you maps they license from others. For
instance - Blue Charts. Garmin does not make these nautical charts - I
believe MapTech makes them. They resell under a license agreement. I have
"unlocked" to use the word, two sets of nautical charts - basically Long
Island Sound and the Hudson River up to Albany, and the Hawaiian Islands.
My wife and I do a lot of sea kayaking. Having been totally enveloped in
fog a couple of times, having the GPSMAP 76CS to follow was worth every
penny. And we do have old fashion compasses also.

The Blue Chart CD contains all of the USA. When you buy the Blue Chart CD
you get to unlock one set of charts. For additional money, I think it is
$75, you can unlock another set and so on. Thus you only need to pay for
the charts you need.

I also purchased the Topo for the National Parks West. I have found these
topo maps to be much more detailed than the regular topo. The National
Park topo CD did not require and unlocking code. We also do a lot of
hiking especially at Volcano National Park on the Big Island in Hawaii.

Ha, I live in New Jersey and we've also gotten a ton of rain. I've been
luckier than you from the sound of it: a bit less rain and a house on top of
a hill.

I just got back from my trip in the SW where the 76CS was put to full use. I
will be posting a new question regarding the amount of control I should
expect with Mapsource.
