| On my old 2610, when it wasn't programmed to take me someplace, as I would
drive down a residential street, It would tell me street numbers I was
passing. It was not perfect, but it was very good and from time to time
that was a useful feature. Although there are many things I really like
about my 2720, that particular feature seems to have gone by the wayside.
Am I overlooking some menu control someplace?

I seem to be seeing a lot of people who wish they'd kept their 2610s..! No
way I'm parting with mine, I know that. A friend is currently considering
getting a GPS and looked at both the 2610 and the 2720, I know which one
I'm telling him to get..!

| I loved my 2610, and when it was stolen, I thought I'd move up. I like the
2720's display and the controls are simpler. I can't say I had difficulty
with the complication of the 2610's controls but all the buttons have a
single purpose. I guess that is simpler. There are just a few features I
had in my 2610 that I miss. I liked the way via points were handled before.
You can still have routes on the 2720 but it is a little more complicated,
that is, you can't add a via point while in route. You can use MapSource to
make routes and then transfer them to the 2720. Some people have posted
that you can not but I have used the 2720 for other things on MapSource and
it communicates just fine. I haven't tried transferring routes but, Garmin
assures me that it will work.
The oral announcement of streets and turns is so much better than the 2610
that I would never go back. You really don't need to look at the display
nearly as much. It gets you ready for the turn in advance like the 2610
did, then it tells you to turn when you need to know to turn with the
street name. It doesn't say 400 ft ahead, it says turn when it is the next
street. You don't need to estimate 200 ft or 400 ft. When it says do the
turn, you simply turn. (no thinking or looking at display is necessary)
This description may not do it justice but I really like the spoken
instructions so much more than 2610's.

I've never found the 2610's spoken instructions a problem. When it says
"in 400ft turn left" it's fairly obvious if you're paying any sort of
attention to the road at all which one it means, and it does indicate the
street name on the screen, on both my car and bike the unit is mounted
where I can see it without moving my eyes so it's not a problem to give it
a quick glance.
Also I would not buy one due to the internal hard drive, on a motorcycle
it would be shaken to pieces in no time. The dealer where I bought my 2610
specialises in motorcycle communications and GPS, he will not sell a 2620
to a biker as he had too many coming back in broken..!

The 2720 does not have a hard drive

So what does it have..? I assumed an upgrade from the 2620 rather than the
2610 as it comes pre-loaded with maps. Does it have a removable CF card..?
What capacity..?

It has 2G internal flash memory. I do not know what form it is in but doubt that
it is a user replaceable CF card.

Hmm, don't like the idea of fixed memory you can't replace. Even with a
hard drive you can always install a bigger one.

| The spoken instructions on the 2610 are great. I agree 100%. When I had
one, I couldn't believe it could be better. If I wasn't forced to replace
my 2610, I would be happy with it. It's just that the 2720 is even better.
Hearing the name of the street is super. The 2620 has a hard drive and
Garmin told they would not recommend it for a Motorcycle. I don't think the
2720 has a hard drive. The ads seem to steer clear of any reference to a
hard drive. I think they have 2 G of flash memory built in. That is sort
of a guess. I mentioned the fact that the ads don't say hard drive to tech
support and they were surprised. They are very clear on the 2620--it has a
hard drive. Shows you how well trained they are about things that matter.
