Author Downloading maps to a GPS unit?

Hi,
I have a Magellan Sportrak Pro (yes I know this is a garmin group!) that I
connect to my pocket PC running Memory Map software so that it can display
real time moving maps showing my position on an Ordnance Survey map of the
UK. This is a bit inconvenient in the mountains (not to mention expensive if
I drop it!).

Are there any hand held Garmin GPS units that will show OS maps on their
display - even if you have to download them?

I'd also like to get maps of the french alps into it if they exist.

Howard,
Both Garmin and Magellan units require maps from their respective
manufacturers. For hiking trips a good solution is to have paper maps of
the desired locations with grid lines on them and your waypoints and routes
marked on them. This can be easily done by scanning the map to make a
digital image and then using software like the free "GPS TrackMaker" to
calibrate the maps and make your waypoints etc. then print it.
