| Howard,
Both Garmin and Magellan units require maps from their respective
manufacturers. For hiking trips a good solution is to have paper maps of
the desired locations with grid lines on them and your waypoints and routes
marked on them. This can be easily done by scanning the map to make a
digital image and then using software like the free "GPS TrackMaker" to
calibrate the maps and make your waypoints etc. then print it.
