Is there a PDA which hosts for a GPS?
- the appropriate additional devices
- and software
- together with a remote antenna?

you can give the cf Que 1620 from Garmin.
http://www.garmin.com/products/cfQue/ It comes with Map Source City Select
North America. the only thing it does not list is a remote antenna. There
are lots of others on the market. Here is another link
http://www.pocketgps.co.uk/ for some ideas.

I use a Dell X50v with DeLorme Street Atlas for Handheld 2006 and a DeLmorme
Blue Logger (Bluetooth equipped as well as internal logging for later
download into your PC). The Street Atlas software also works with the Dell
GPS receiver which Dell is apparently not selling any more. This device was
also Bluetooth enabled.

The only real disadvantage is that the Street Atlas does not start the
Bluetooth in the Dell when the software starts. You have to first start the
Bluetooth in the PDA, connect to the BlueLogger (which you have started
earlier), start Street Atlas and then tell Street Atlas to connect to GPS.
The Dell PDA software that came with the Dell GPS unit starts the PDA
Bluetooth and connects with the GPS device when the software is started in
the PDA. However, the Dell software does not allow for recording a "track"
that can be used for anything except "playback" with the Dell Software. The
Street Atlas will record a track in the PDA plus the Blue Logger records a
track. I guess it depends upon how much you want to record and be able to
use your recorded tracks.

There are probably better systems out there, but I have neither the time nor
the money to investigate them. The Dell/DeLorme lash-up works for me.

Regards,

Turner

Yes. Any PDA with a serial connection will work, either Palm or PPC. I
use my Palm T3 regularly with a Garmin Legend, with Mapopolis on the Palm.
There are other programs, several freeware if you don't need the maps.
Cetus is one of the best for Palm. I use a reradiating antenna from PC-
Mobile with the Legend, mostly in the car, but also when walking under
heavy tree cover.

Should work with no problems. You'll need to set the GPS to NMEA in/out
instead of Garmin protocol, but that's easy to do. You can get cables from
pfranc.com or from pc-mobile.com. Pfranc is probably the best, because you
can order from a local pfranc person in most areas, while pc-mobile is in
Hong Kong. I have received orders from them in 3 or 4 days, though, and no
sales tax, so that's certainly a viable option. I use pfranc for buying
just connectors to make my own custom cables.

Well, I had purchased all the cables, pFranc and the connetor to my phone
from the SupplyNet cables, downloaded the driver for my PPC (openport 2.1)
and all I get is on the screen for the GPS setup just reads "checking port"
seems like there is no feed from the GPS unit (etrex) Do you have any
ideas? please advice any help is appreciated!

The connection to the eTrex can be problematic - make sure the connection
is solid and correctly oriented. Sometimes the cable appears to be
connected but really isn't quite complete, because the connector is very
slightly cocked. Other than that, I can't help much, because I don't
have a PPC. I use a Palm.

In any case thank you very much for answering the post, for some reason it
worked today, I use a program called Tweak2k, that some times blocks
certain programs reg-keys and so on, I don't know if what is called the
Terminal Services Client had to do with it, the program can change the
value to what ever you want it, I just changed it to 1, and it seem to work
that way (who knows tomorrow) on the other hand, I bought the emax combo,
the one that has the cigarette lighter charger and the data cable, I was
using just the data cable and got no where when I used both the connection
was made and the PPC received the data flow from the gps, go figure.....but
in all thanks for the tips on where to buy this cables.

Happy thanksgiving,
