I can buy City Select v7 on eBay. Do I need to have a previous versiojn of
City Select to use the v7? I have Mapsource Topo East/West but not City

Thanks!

If you`re only getting an "upgrade" be warned that Garmin send them out
for FREE. You need to pay for an unlock code to use them, and have a
previous version installed.

You're missing something...

$75 to upgrade, NOT $150.
Do you have an older version?

If not, then the $150 is probably accurate.

ok, must not have seen that. Yes. I have a 76cs with City Select V6. I'm
not sure that it's even worth 75 bucks though. Thanks for straightening
me out, it's been a rough day... ;-)

Then you won't (legally) be able to use the program. That is the price,
pay it or not, it's up to you, but don't expect anyone here to condone
piracy. Well I suppose some might, but I certainly won't.

Did I say ONE FRIGGIN' THING that was even CLOSE to piracy?????

I'll answer for you, NO I DIDN'T. I just said that there was no way I
was paying for it.

You really need to go to a class and get some reading comprehension skills.

Now, before you reply getting all testy for me "yelling", re-read the
posts and tell me where you got the idea that I had any intention of
what you're attempting to acuse me of.

I'm very happy. I just got my CD or V7 and it verified my previous
version and unlocked it for free (zero, nada).

I had just bought my Quest a few weeks ago, but I did buy it on Ebay,
which is a big no-no for Garmin.

But I have no complaints. didn't have to pay anything for the CD or
the install.

That's true. The upgrade if free if you bought v6 recently. I forget
what the date is but I've had mine longer...

After spent around $2,000 on 3 Garmin GPS units, I ain't gonna spend no
more than $30-50 for software upgrading to support the same old hardware.
And I may not gonna buy another Garmin GPS because of the spicy software
upgrading, I will continue to use the old one and may switch to other =
with
more flexible street-level map software (my opinion)

Also, you are missing $75 cuz I think it costs $75 for City Select and
$150 for City Navigator (the version my unit uses).

Just don't upgrade every year. Go every other year then it's basically half
the cost. Or $38 a year for select and $75 a year for Navigator if you look
at it that way. There's no need to upgrade every year. Really unless your
having problems all the time of not finding places and/or wrong info then
why update? I'm still using Navigator V5, though I do have the V6 and V7
Navigator Upgrade disks. I just haven't had the need to update yet. I do
the same thing with other software like Quicken or Norton Systemworks. I
don't upgrade every year, I do every other year.

I wish the software was cheaper. But it takes a lot of work to drive all
the roads in the US, Program all the different info for each road(and there
is a lot of things like Road Speed, Direction of travel, road type,
etc, etc, etc. Do you know how many roads there are in the US? All the Data
for Address for Residential, and then all the commercial businesses. Lots
and lots of man hours.

I've look at the prices from other systems from other companies, and Garmin
is on par with other companies on Map software prices. Prices will come
down as more and more people have GPS systems.

I purchased the Garmin Quest on a Friday, $260 at CC. It came with City
Select North America v6. Registered the GPS and unlocked CS v6. Went to the
Garmin upgrade page and requested CS v7 Update DVD. It arrived the next
Thursday, 6 days after ordering. Plugged in the Quest and ran the unlock
wizard. No shipping or upgrade charges.

They always ship the update CD/DVD FREE, but you have to pay to unlock it.
There are exceptions to the rule though. If you just bought the Unit and
now are just registering it with older software then what is currently
released, then you of course get the Update for FREE. If you update your
software and they come out with a new version within like a month, you would
also get a free update. Wait until next year, it will cost you if you want
to update that unit. Next time, $75 for you which your getting off cheap.
If you had Navigator, then it's $150.
I have City Navigator V6 and V7 right here for FREE. I'm still using V5
because I haven't needed to update and pay the $150 to do it yet.

I am still using City Navigator v4.01 and don't think newer version will
be much better, or I don't think v7 will make $450 difference, 3 upgrades
<g> )

It would be nice if we can run the regular computer map (like MS Street,
Street Atlas etc.) so we don't have to depend on expensive Mapsource's
product.

And if more new GPS users knowing about the expensive software upgrade,
the hardware depends on software, and the newer version often not much
different than or not much better than older version etc.. then they may =
not
even buy the GPS to begin with.

Right now, the price of inexpensive GPS is almost the price of software
alone, and buying more expensive GPS like gonna throw away the most
expensive hardware (if someting is wrong with the software). Example =
just
about 1-2 months ago, a member here reported he had to reinstall his =
system,
and can't reinstall his City Navigator v4.x (it won't accept the key or
whatever), and Garmin refused to help with older version.

I suggested to help himself with the working version on Peer-2-Peer, and
he reported having the software problem solved.

My older GPSes use Metro Guide, and the newer Street Pilot III came with
City Navigator v4.01 (Garmin released v5 about 5-6 months after I got =
mine
so no free upgrade).

I sincerely hope you are making a (lame) joke with this statement.
If not, then you seem to be under the impression that one would have
to buy all the intermediary updates to a map product. That is not
the case.

Which is what I was going to say! You don't have to buy version 5 and 6
and then buy 7 to use 7. That would be like Owning Windows 95, and then
wanting to upgrade to Windows XP, but having to buy Windows 98 and Windows
ME also. That's just stupid. You can upgrade right to version 7 for $150
from version 4.01!!! It's time for a upgrade. Lots of changes from V4 to
V7.

I have upgraded my SPIII every year since NA V4.01 - the original one came
out. Many significant map changes were noticed.

The Europe version also has been upgraded to 7. Use both, both are worth
the cost - especially since the MB version of Nav Tech's database sucks.
They have mainly city areas only.... I bring my SPIII along, much better.
