C330 Question re: "Normal" GPS Mode vs "WAAS"
|
|
|
| I'm new to using GPS, so forgive me for this basic question.
I bought my StreetPilot C330 a few days ago and haven't had a chance to
try it on a long trip yet. However, I'm pleased with its performance
around town.
In playing with the system options, I see that the default setting for
GPS mode is "Normal". The other 2 choices are "Off" and "WAAS".
It's my understanding that WAAS is more accurate. So, why would this
default to "Normal"? Is there a drawback in setting the GPS mode to
WAAS? And why would I ever want to set this mode to "off"?
Thanks!

Where are you located..? WAAS is only operational in North America. There
is an equivalent (EGNOS) due to come online in Europe at some stage but it
keeps getting put back so when it will finally appear is anyone's guess..!
If you aren't getting any signals from the WAAS system then there is no
point having it activated on the GPS.
Off simply means that. If you want to use the GPS indoors to plan a route
and don't want it constantly searching for satellites, then you switch the
receiver off.

I'm in North America. So, should I set it to WAAS, or is there some
drawback to that -- like using up too much power or something?
Thanks for the explanation of why I might want to set it to OFF
occassionally.

If you're in N.A. then you want it on. I believe that it's more
accruate. I leave it on with my 76cs and when it says "arriving at
destination" in the woods, I'm usually within 2-3 feet. I outta be able
to handle it from there. ;-)

Never read the fine print. There ain't no way you're going to like it.

| I turn mine off for route planning and to look for POIs at my
destination. The other thing you want to use is Set Loc - once you
select a destination (this only works with GPS off) and view the map,
there is a Set Loc button that then behaves as if you are at that
destination. Then you can search for POIs, etc. without the GPS
receiver trying to set you back to where you are.
Also, for example, if you are going from A to B to C and you are at A,
but want to see what route it will select for B to C - turn of the
GPS, select B as the destination and then Set Loc and then set the
destination for C - you will see the proposed route from B to C
etc
etc
