| This weekend, my Garmin Quest was stolen from my car.
I know, I should have kept it with me. I usually brought it in at
night.
Anyway, I really miss it. If anyone out there is thinking of upgrading
to a newer Garmin, I would love to make an offer on your Quest.
Thanks
Douglas

| Sorry to hear about the theft.
Two thoughts:
1) Check with Garmin as to whether they keep a list of stolen unit
serial numbers so they can block issuing unlock codes. Won't get your
unit back but would eventually reduce the value of the units to thieves
if they can't load new maps.
2) If you only used a single unlock code previously (i.e. didn't use
CitySelect for any other GPS receivers), then you could buy a new Quest
and resell the CitySelect that comes with it on eBay or elsewhere to
recoup part of the cost.

In case of theft (with a police report) will Garmin re-issue a new unlock
code?

| Often things that are stolen for quick cash end up on eBay or at a
pawn shop. In addition to the other suggestions, shop local sources
and eBay. Maybe even a GPS wanted add would turn up something.
Good Luck,
Doug.

| Thanks everyone for your kind words. I really liked all the features
of the Quest, especially the fact that I could just put it in my pocket
- I should have done that last Saturday!
I'm trolling Ebay, and hope to get a good buy soon (under $350).
I don't really understand the whole unlock code thing. I just know it
worked for me, not sure if I could sell my extra CD without a long
explanation of how they could still use it.

If $350 is the target price point on eBay, I would drop $20 more and get it
from a reputable seller. Amazon has it for $370 shipped free. I picked one
up for my wife a few weeks ago for $351 delievered.

My location 6' 42.6870" S 146' 58.7581" E
I know the feeling too well, while south on holiday I purchased an I-
Finder
as my first GPS just to see if a GPS was going to do all the things I
thought it would do for me, the sd card was good and I used expert GPS to
view on scanned maps on the pc where I had been for fishing trips and
stored
locations of villages I had been to.
That lasted about 4 weeks before work was broken into and the thieves
took
it. I hoped it would be returned but fat chance of that.
After deciding to get another GPS I made a list of what I would have
liked
different. Mapping was one, base map will often put hotels a fair
distance
offshore. So a PDA, Ozi and a garmin 10 were chosen. The hx4700 in an
otter
case with the extended battery worked well.
This time only 2 weeks before the thieves broke into the apartment, by
busting 3 deadlocks, and took the PDA and the cradle it was sitting in,
along with a few thousand worth of other irreplaceable items. I still
have
the GPS 10 but no PDA. There is an 8' fence with razorwire at the top, 4
security guards are meant to patrol and one of the guards has a dog that
is
meant to be as mean as they get, that is what it can be like here (no I
am
not in jail, that is the apartment block). I am destined not to use a GPS
for a while as I can't get a PDA locally. I'm going south for Christmas
so
I'll have to pick up another hx4700 there.

| Don't you just hate these petty criminals?
I just bought what they call a "car safe". Basically it's a metal
briefcase with a locking cable.
Most of the time, I now pocket my Quest and take it with me. But there
are times when I have to leave small valuables in my car, and this
seems to be the ticket.
Unless, or course, they steal the whole car!
