I have a Garmin GSPmap 76 that I want to provide external power to from a 12
V battery. Since the range of input is 8 - 35 V DC, there is no problem
here.
My question is should the Garmin internal batteries be the rechargeable kind
or the regular kind? Or does it make any differences?
Thanks.

The internal batteries will *not* be recharged when using the unit on
external power. So you can use either primary or rechargeable cells
internally. If you'll only rarely be using the unit on internal power
then primary cells (either alkaline or lithium) would be preferred
since they retain a charge longer (less self-discharge). OTOH, if
you'll frequently be using internal power then NiMH rechargeables would
be less expensive overall.

Thanks for the information. That was the info I wanted.

I tried NiMH rechargables and didn't care for them. For whatever reason
they didn't hold a charge all that long. I use Lithium Ion throw-aways
in my 76CS now exclusively while not in the car and the have a very
acceptable life. In the car, I have a 12V power cord.

Never read the fine print. There ain't no way you're going to like it.

Lithium ion cells are rechargeable and have a voltage of about 3.7V
making them unsuitable as a direct AA cell replacement. The primary AA
cells (by Energizer and others) are lithium iron disulfide which have a
lower voltage (about 1.6V) and can be used in place of alkaline AAs.
They work fine, especially in cold temperatures, and have a very long
shelf life. But they are expensive if the GPS will frequently be used
on internal battery power for long periods of time.
