I've been shopping for a small gps unit for over a year and have noticed the
eTrex unit prices drop lately are they being phased out for a new line or
just not very popular?

Two reasons for concern are being discussed right now on the
geocaching.com website.
The first is that there are rumors of new models coming out soon, but
the second concerns the optional street mapping software (City Select)
from Garmin. This is needed to make the LegendC/VistaC much more
useful by adding detailed maps, auto-routing, address lookup, and a POI
database.

The current version of CitySelect (v7) has individual map region sizes
of about 1 - 2 MB, so the user can select quite a few to download into
the eTrexC memory of 24 MB therefore closely matching the overall area
they want covered. But Garmin has indicated they plan to discontinue
CitySelect and just offer the similar CityNavigator. Unfortunately the
latest version of CityNavigator has much larger regions - typically 10
- 25 MB. Some of these won't fit at all in the eTrexC models and many
will only allow you to load a single region. That means that if you
live near the edge between two regions you'll have to choose which of
the two to download and won't have detail maps when you travel in the
adjoining region. Some email from Garmin has indicated that they *may*
offer another version of CityNavigator with smaller region sizes, but
no commitment to do so. I wouldn't recommend purchase of an etrex
LegendC/VistaC until they make a firm commitment to support them
properly with future releases of suitable maps.
