I checked the memory IC's inside a opened Etrex Vista and see that
there are three of them:
Samsung K9F5608UOA (NAND Flash), IC62LV12816LL (Static RAM) and AM29LV
( Flash Memory). All are rewritable! There are no ROM IC's at the
device with the capacity to save the Basemap. So statement from Garmin,
that the Basemap cannot be changed is wrong. The only thing is that
there no known way outside Garmin how to change basemap ...

Similarly, the 60c/cs and 76c/cs share a single physical memory device
for the downloadable maps and the basemaps (56 + 8 = 64 MB for the
60c/cs and 115 + 13 = 128 MB for the 76c/cs). However there is still
no way to change the basemap so from a practical standpoint Garmin's
statement is correct.
