Author Mounting my GPS - Do I need an external antenna?

Hey all. I need some advice. Here's my dilema:

I have a GPSMap 76CS, with Auto-mount, and I am going to mount it
permanantly either on top of the dash board, or on the face of the dash
(haven't decided yet.) I simply want it within eyesight, and for it to be
securely mounted.

I am, however, worried about the reception. At the present, I am currently
just laying the unit on the dashboard and leaving it. This works enough to
fit my needs. I just wonder, though, how good it would perform if it were
A. Mounted on top of the dash, or B. mounted on the face of the dash. I'm
afraid that I'll need an external antenna.

What do you think? The unit has an MCX connector, but I'm not sure if it
requires a powered antenna or not.

Could you please give me some feedback and possibly some links to where I
can find such an animal?

Thanks in advance!!

Happy

Probably do not need an external antenna esp. on top of the dash if it
is working fine now. On the face of the dash would probably even work fine
if the top of the GPS is still under the windshield.

It is a powered antenna but it get the power from the GPS so only one
cable going to the GPS is all there is.

We have both the Garmin antennas and the Gilsson antennas.

Look for a Garmin GA 27C http://tinyurl.com/duj6l
If you don't want to run the cord out of a window it would probably work
just fine with the antenna unit affixed to the windshield with double
sticky tape and the GPS unit lying on the seat or wherever.

Yes, your unit requires an active antenna (or at least something that
draws some power) and the antenna will draw power from the MCX
connector. In most circumstances I'd expect your reception to be fine
with or without an external antenna unless your car has a metallized
windshield. But an external antenna will give you better reception in
marginal conditions like driving through particularly high and narrow
urban canyons. Since you can get an excellent Gilsson antenna for
about $20 I'd recommend getting one even if you only need to use it for
relatively unusual situations.
