| Hi all, I'm using a Garmin Fortrex201 and have just purchased the mapsource
software version 2.02 for my PC. While the software does all I need, the map
is more like something out of a pre school game and vaguely resembles the
coast I am on, landmarks end up in the ocean and visa versa .
I have just looked at garmins mapsource viewer at the metroguide Australia
and the world map and both are very ordinary to say the least.
Is it possible to find a map that's a little more accurate or realistic? or
are we not at that level yet?
Particularly interested in the central west coast of Aust.

I think you bought the Worldmap 2.02?
Mapsource is the program that displays the maps and can have any number
of maps (look at it as MS Word) that program is now in version 6.9.1
The maps (like the word documents) also have versions Worldmap 2.02,
City Navigator V8 ...
Since your Fortrex cannot display maps you actually didn't need
Mapsource, it is mostly used to upload Garmin maps to a Garmin GPS like
the Streetpilots. Those detailed maps can be quite expensive (they can
be a multiple of the price of a Fortrex)
There are other programs (free or shareware) that can extract the
tracklog and waypoints from your Fortrex and put new ones in it (Ozi
explorer comes to mind, have a look at this page for some programs
http://www.digitalgrove.net/Toolbox_GPS.htm). Some of these can also
show maps but I think your best option for detailed maps (even
satellite images!) is on the net (http://maps.google.com , ...) and if
you look around a little you can find out how to get the
waypoints/tracks into your GPS it is really not hard (maybe someone
else here can pick up that task ;) ).

Thanks I should have said mapsource trip and waypoint manager, the map in

Thanks

I'm not familiar with Trip and Waypoint manager but I think its map
cannot be changed.
Like I said, have a look at some of the free (or shareware) programs on
the net, they should work with your Fortrex and give you the same (if
not more) functionality of Trip and Waypoint manager and some allow you
to use satellite map overlays.

From a UK point of view, my GPS60 came with trip and waypoint manager
(MapSource) and a really quite useless European map (Very low detail. Large
towns but no streets).
It is possible to load other much more detailed maps (street level). I have
seen the City Navigator maps running with MapSource (on a friend's PC who
has a 2610 I think), and these are quite detailed. And this worked with my
GPS60 too. Obviously you can't upload a map, but you can upload routes,
waypoints etc. You select which map you want in a selection box (top left).
But, there are other free utilities that can work with scanned OS maps etc.

Trip and Waypoint Manager base map is just supposed to provide a very high
level overview to give your waypoints some kind of visual reference.
Worldmap is slightly better and pretty cheap, but for accurate road data you
would need Metroguide or City Select (City Select is overkill for your needs
since you don't have a mapping or auto-routing GPS).
In North America, we have many 3rd pary choices for better mapping as well.
Not sure what is available for Australia though.

| I have to admit, using a sp2610 which was wonderfully accurate everywhere I
went, I had a similar problem. I was using City Navigator 6 last summer in
the USA, I was camping on Assateague Island off the East coast of Maryland
and had a similar experience. My GPS knew where all the roads were up to a
point. It had the water in the wrong places. For example, we were camping
about a quarter mile into the bay on the West side of the Island. This was
an honest to goodness campground that had been there for years. My GPS
didn't even warn me as I drove into the water. She could have said "make a
U turn". It seemed strange to me that the roads were accurate and the
coastline was not.
