| I think I read here that if I use the external power and it momentarily
loses power the unit loses power too even with batteries in. Is this
correct?
(Maybe all it said was that external power does not charge the
batteries...?)
Thanks

No. You have two user-configurable options for what the unit will do
on losing external power. 1) display a warning and continue running
indefinitely on batteries (what I use), or 2) continue running for
(IIRC) 30 seconds while displaying a warning box that the unit is about
to shut off and offfering you a chance to keep it running by pressing
(IIRC) ENTER. If you don't press ENTER, it shuts off at the end of the
30 seconds. I could be remembering wrong about the exact duration or
the button, but I am certain about the general nature of the behavior.
I haven't used option 2 since I got my 76CS.

That *is* correct. You may also be remembering discussion about the
infamous Garmin loose-battery problem, where the unit will shut down if
it's running on batteries and vibration causes a momentary loss of
contact with the terminals. I haven't experienced this, but my 76CS
isn't normally subjected to a lot of vibration. Variation in battery
size has a lot to do with it, too.
