Correct. Also, the prompt will automatically disappears if external
power is restored. I guess Garmin just wants to make sure the user
knows it's consuming the batteries. A really nice feature. As I
understand it, users asked for this for years, and Garmin finally
complied, but I think only in new units. AFIK, they didn't upgrade the
firmware for older units to provide the option to stay on.

Since you plan to use the external antenna, seems to me the best place
(from the 76CS's perspective) would be in a pocket close to your body.
Warm, and minimal vibration. But maybe there isn't a good way to run
the power and antenna cables through your clothing.
