Is there a way to get Mapsource to show the same area every time it opens on
the PC ? As it is now it will open showing the area it showed when it was
closed. This is quite annoying as I often useMapsource to investigate areas
some way from home, but I would like to have it showing my home area every
time it starts. I am using the latest version 6.9.1

Start the program and click on Save As... and see what it offers for a
folder, file name, and file type.

There may be a default file in the offered folder or in the program
files folder that it used when you started the program and then it saves
to that same file when you close the program.

If you can identify the file, save the screen you want to it by exiting
the program. The change the files attributes to read only from Windows
Explorer. If you get an error when you close the program because the
file is read only, you can ignore it or, if you want the current area,
save it under a different name.

Sometimes you can look in the *.ini file in the program files folder and
figure out what the name of the default file is.

Sorry - won't work! Mapsource always stores the last display region in the
registry when you exit the program and opens up with this region even if you
are opening a saved file from somewhere else.

I tried denying permission to set the keys in settings part of the registry
(for Current_User) but obviously MapSource desperately wants to write in
there as soon as it starts since it crashes with a broken-registry message.

Best you can do is to create a waypoint in the middle of your home area,
save to a file and point your MapSource shortcut to this file instead of
mapsource.exe. The program will still open up where you last used it but
now you can quickly double click on the waypoint name in the waypoint list,
click "Show on Map" then "OK" and hit delete to kill the waypoint.

It sounds a bit of a fag but it's easier than finding your home area by
panning and zooming.

Thanks for the details David. I don't use MapSource and was guessing at
an answer if that was not apparent.

That is almost like the goal of the programmers was to allow the users
to return to only one single previously used desktop region. Sort of
bizarre.

By opening the map file instead of the program, it will open those maps with
the program.

Sorry, but this won't help. Even if I save my home area map and open the
Mapcource by clicking on that file, it still opens showing the area it
showed when I closed the program.

Only thing I can suggest is make sure it is showing the area you want
before you close it down.

I agree it's annoying. My work-around is to have a file saved with
either a route or maps saved that define the area I'd usually like to
see. Then when I open it on that file I select the route or the set of
maps and right-click to get the choice to show them on the map screen.

David,

this leads to a very simple workaround.

Locate the registry key and export it once after setting it up
to your liking. Edit the exported file to contain only the
desired settings. Delete all others.

Make a batch file that first imports the .reg file into the
registry, using the regedit /s filename.reg syntax, then starts
MapSource.

Problem solved.
