| Ok - Just tried out my new external antenna yesterday and have a few
questions:
- How dose it determine the track up display? based upon how the antenna is
orientated? or the handheld unit?
- Does having an external antenna (and external power) change the display in
some way? There is much less detail and it takes longer to draw.
Thanks

The antenna position and GPS orientation has nothing to do with the
orientation of the Track Up display. Some definitions:
Track - The trail of breadcrumbs you've left behind you.
Heading - A line drawn through the breadcrumbs, the direction you are
traveling.
The GPS will determine your heading from your track and put the
direction the track is heading at the top of the screen.
The GPS does not calculate a heading (and can lose track of the last
heading) when you are stationary, you have to be moving (a slow walking
speed is enough). Start moving and after a short distance the GPS will
calculate a heading from the changes in the fixes and put that at the top.
At rest, the heading will drift or wander around. It can be a little
confusing to look at the map when it is changing like that, for some
uses (route planning for example) it is easier to use the GPS in the
North Up mode.

What model are you using? Nothing in the display should change when you
change antennas or use external power. It sounds like you may have
zoomed in (less detail) and have the level of detail set to a more
detailed mode (longer to draw) after changing to the external antenna.
Try using it with the built in antenna at a known detail level and zoom
scale, then add the antenna without changing the settings.

| hey - Thanks for the info - Now that you say it I understand the track up!
It is a 70cs - I did try the detial, zoom in and out - but I only tried for
a few minutes and it 'seemed' to take longer to draw and was missing the
cross roadfs I have seen. I will play with it more.
Thanks again.

I am using an external antenna with an IQue unit to precisely measure the
location of benchmarks. Obviously, the position reported on the GPS receiver
is that of the antenna, and not that of the unit (which can be 8 feet away
and 7 feet above ground on a tripod mount, in my application).
Your question about the display is curious. I have not seen any change in
the display when switching between internal and external antennas. But it
certainly is interesting to watch the signal strength of the satellites when
making the change. Wow! Those bars suddenly get longer when the amplified
antenna is connected to the receiver! :-)
