Author Losing all routes and waypoints?? - Garmin 76CS

I just got back from a week in northern Maine. Before I
left, I loaded my Garmin 76CS with maps, routes, and
waypoints from last year. I kept good batteries in the unit.
I also marked some new waypoints and had some new routes in
it after a few days.

I turned it on the next day and every single waypoint and
route was gone. Any idea what happened? I know that I
didn't intentionally delete anything.

They are there.
I think you have the option to only show Waypoints near your current
position on. If you are far enough from those points, you won't see
them. Try this: Choose 'Find Waypoints', press Menu, choose 'Find by
Name'. And there they are..

Nope, they are *gone*. I'm familiar with the distance/view
settings and that they won't show on the map if the settings
are too high. I'm talking about, they are totally gone from
all access menus. I had probably about 100 waypoints and
quite a few routes from Maine, PA, and NY stored and they
just disappeared. Find/waypoints/find by name (or anyother
option for that matter) shows nothing - nada. I didn't have
my laptop with me in the remote reaches of Maine so
reloading wasn't an option until I got home. Thank heaven I
hadn't gone into the remote reaches of the Northern Maine
Woods. I did have a compass and topo as backup so I wasn't
in danger but I'm concerned and would like to understand
what happened. I'm sending Garmin Tech. support a note and
will let you know what they say.

The only thing I've heard of similar to your issue is from a guy who
was having persistent problems with his 60CS locking up and/or shutting
down by itself. In some instances, the unit restarted itself, and all
of his waypoints, tracks, routes and (IIRC) loaded maps had been
erased. He has just sent it back to Garmin for the second time for
this problem.

The only other thing I can think of (and I concede up front that I
consider this unlikely) is if somehow the buttons that trigger a master
reset got pressed while the unit was being stored. I believe that
would erase your waypoints; but it would be really hard for that to
happen accidentally.

I can't think of anything else *you* could have done *unintentionally*
to erase your waypoints.

Thanks Roy. I couldn't come up with anything either but ya
never know what someone else may think of so I figured that
I'd ask.

I'm aware of the master reset sequence and also find that
hard to believe, especially since it was sitting on a window
sill over night. I'll post the reply from Garmin Tech. when
I get one.
