what is the newest software that will still work with this gps system. and
is it better than the original road and recreation software.

Unfortunately the Roads&Recreation maps are probably still your best
choice despite not being updated. Garmin's US Topo will work as well
but is even more dated than R&R wrt roads and other manmade features
and many of the roads aren't named. MetroGuide maps are much more
up-to-date but also more memory intensive. Most individual segments
are still under the 1.4 MB memory size of the III+ but there are some
in urban areas that exceed that. But the overall area that you can fit
into the III+ is so much smaller than with R&R that it isn't really
worthwhile despite the better maps.
