Garmin Nuvi and Topo mapping

| Hi, sorry about the newbie question, but I'm hoping a gps expert can
help. Just got the Garmin Nuvi (to replace my old Garmin iQue 3200). So
far, it's wonderful. But I'd really like to have topo maps on it for
use while hiking in addition to the usual roadmap stuff. Anyone have
experience with doing this or a link to already existing info on doing
this? Thanks in advance.

Looking at Garmin's web page for the nüvi,
http://www.garmin.com/products/nuvi/
they make no mention at all of MapSource product compatibility nor do
they offer any MapSource products on the accessories page.
If you look at the manual it mentions having a MapSource compatibility
but does say which products. So it looks like that model is a departure
from the earlier Garmin models that you would have been able to use any
of a number of optional mapping packages.
If you go to the page for topo mapping products
http://www.garmin.com/cartography/ontheTrail/ and look at MapSource
compatibility by GPS model, it indicates the nüvi 350 is only compatible
with street mapping packages, no topo packages.
Maybe you can donate the extra money you would have spent for optional
mapping packages to a charity of your choice? :> ) But if you still
have your iQUE 3200, that has full MapSource Topo capability.
Some pro's and con's on topo mapping packages:
The detail in Garmin MapSource Topo is inferior to that in Magellan's
MapSend Topo 3D. Garmin's has 1:100K detail and the Magellan product is
more like 1:40K or maybe 1:50K with some additional details added.
Garmin offers a 1:24K product but it only covers selected national and
state parks.
For Garmin you have to buy three topo packages to get full U.S.
coverage, with Magellan you get full U.S. coverage in one topo package.
To get the best topo detail you have to go outside the Garmin and
Magellan product lines and use USGS 1:24K DRG's or the National
Geographic 1:24K product.
Maybe it is just me but I swear some of the newer products in the Garmin
and Magellan lines seem to be saying "more is less", "better is dumber",
and "you didn't really need that so we're leaving it off". Some of the
traditional features, details, and options that I used or enjoyed
playing around with are going away.

| Thanks for the feedback Jack. I assume this device is incompatable for
a reason, rather than just Garmin changing things to disable
features...
I've also asked Garmin the same question. I'll let the group know what
they say.

| Yes you can load TOPO or any other Mapsource maps onto the nuvi.

| Here is a reply to a similar question, which I received today from
Garmin:
[=2E..Since the n=FCvi was not designed to be used outdoors and therfore
not designed to be used with Topo maps, it will not display Topo maps
as well as an outdoor unit. This is not to say that Topo maps cannot
be installed in the unit, just that they won't look like they normally
would in a unit designed to use them. ..]
