Garmin GPS18 - USB vs Serial
|
|
|
| Hi Folks,
Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this product?
Does the USB version still require external power or does it get it via
the USB interface?
What about power for the serial version?
Thanks

| Also - can someone tell me what height GPS altitudes are in - ie I
assume they are above sea level? and that headings are True not
Magnetic?

The USB version gets the power from the USB port

Serial version requires external power. It would be possible to make up
an adapter that would let you "steal" the power from a USB port if one
was nearby.
The USB versions of the GPS 18 will only output data in the Garmin
protocol (i.e., can only be used with Garmin software). The serial and
OEM versions can be configured to output in either the Garmin protocol
or in NMEA 0183.
More info on the 18 USB and 18 PC here:
http://www.garmin.com/products/gps18/
and for the 18 OEM here:

Unless you need the Garmin protocol, the Altina, Holux, Rikaline, etc.,
mouse style receivers (USB and serial, most can be used either way with
PS2 cable adapters) are a much better buy and, in some cases, made by
the same people that make the Garmin stuff.

On most consumer grade GPS receivers you can choose to display either
True or Magnetic for headings. Altitudes are above sea level.
The altitude is best considered approximate, that is the least accurate
figure they produce.
