Street Pilot III vs. 2610: Which to Buy
|
|
|
| Need help. I have been looking at the Street Pilot III and 2610 units on
Ebay. There seems to be about a $150 difference between the two models. Does
it make sense to buy the 2610 which has the maps built in or the Street
Pilot III for $150 less and have to buy the local maps and updates?

First - you should get the same maps (different versions maybe) with both
units. The 2610 is a much newer GPS and will hold all of the US and Canada
with a 2GB CF Memory Card. The SP 3 uses a proprietary memory card and
currently the largest is 256MB - hold a lot, but I have a 128 and 64 mb for
my maps.
The 2620 and 27xx series have all the maps preloaded.

I'd go for the the 2610. I have an SP-III. Nice unit, but limited by
memory card size (largest feasible is 256M, and I have that and a 128M).
I will use it until it fails, but if I were buying today and making
your choice, I'd go with 2610 (I think it uses CF and I have seven 1GB
CF cards!)

| Check out the Garmin website - Streetpilot III is now classed as a
"discontinued" product.

And I bet the 2610 is not far behind re "discontinued". 2610 definitly
would be my choice (and is my answer to this quesiton) if I did not
have a perfectly good SP-III in use.

| Thanks guys. Actually I don't travel extensively to new destinations and
usually rely on my "Streets & Trips" when I do; however, the car GPS units
look like a slick little accessory and so have piqued my interest. Since I
won't be relying on my unit to guide me anywhere in particular (it will be
more of a recreational toy), I thought I
would start out with something a little less expensive than a super latest
model. The voice guide also sounds really neat so I want to include that. If
I latch onto one of these
babies I will use until I get tired of it and then pass it on. By that time
I will know if I want forget it, to trade up or perhaps look for an OEM unit
in my next
car.

Sometime thing doesn't go the simplest way, or the less expensive =
sometime
can end up be more expensive with some limited. I have SP III color =
which
still serve me well, but if I have a choice then I would go for the unit
accept CF memory card (or even pre-loaded is still better than part =
loaded).
