| Hi NG
I have been looking around for a GPS-unit especially for long tour cyclists.
Now I see Garmin introducing a new Edge 305, January 2006:
http://www.garmin.com/products/edge305/
They have increased the track points to 13000 - thatīs better than the
former 10000.
But why not a compass? I really do not understand how they put together the
features of their units related to their customers ( the different
segments).
Does anybody know about the reliability of the informed date of availability
?
I have considered eTrex Vista C - but only 10000 track point.

>From my standpoint the more critical feature missing is a map. I've
been using a GPS in lieu of a bicycle cyclometer for over 6 years now
and have found the map to be very helpful when touring. Although I
usually have a preplanned route, the map can let me see alternates if
there are road closures (the signed 'detour' routes are frequently not
very bicycle-friendly), and is also helpful in finding stores along the
way for food and other supplies.

The difference between 10000 and 13000 trackpoints is pretty minor -
just set the unit to record points a little less frequently. I'd
consider either the LegendC or VistaC to be superior to the Edge305 for
bicycle touring, but both have somewhat limited map memory for long
tours. The upcoming 'Cx' models with memory cards look very promising.

More significantly there's no map. Having a map was my main reason for
switching to a GPS instead of a conventional cyclometer over 6 years
ago. Great for finding my way and also for locating stores for food
and other supplies while on a tour.

The upcoming "Cx" models from Garmin with TransFlash cards look
promising. The Lowrance iFinder series has the most trackpoints but
unfortunately doesn't include timestamps or altitude. The Magellan
eXplorist 400/500/600 let you store almost unlimited tracks on the SD
card so those should also be considered (and do include timestamps and
altitude data).

OK you are right but at the moment the map possibility isnīt the most
important, However, in future it could be.

No, apparently they were supposed to be announced by Garmin at the CES
show in early January but some dealers put out some ad material early.
Based on past announcements my guess would be for availability around
April but that's entirely a guess at this point.
