Slightly OT: GPS and Airport Security
|
|
|
| Just bought my Garmin C330 about two months ago and like it a lot.
Next week, I'll be flying to Dallas on business, and would like to use
it in the car that I'll be renting, as I really don't know my way around
the area.
I would like to pack it in my carry-on bag for the flight since I think
that it'll be a bit safer (ie - less chance of being damaged) there than
in my checked baggage. But I want to make sure that there will be no
problems getting thru airport security with it.
Any thoughts on this? Have any of you packed your GPS in your carry-on
bag? Any problems in doing so?
Thanks!

Have taken my 2610 through three different airports as carry-on with no
problems.

Go through with my 2610 all the time. Last time was Nov 26th and I'm going
out again on Dec 8th.

No problem with my GPS, but at BWI they pulled me aside and hand
searched my carry-on because they weren't sure what all of the circular
'shadows' were... they were the 'beans' in my garmin bean bag dashboard
mount. Everything was fine after they identified what it was.

Although it does not specifically list GPS, I would think it falls into the
electronic category with PDA's etc. Happy flying!

| Just make sure that you've got the batteries charged as the TSA will
probably ask you to turn the unit on. They're quite suspicious of
electronics that don't turn on.

No problem at all. I've carried-on my Quest dozens of times. Never even a
question about it. I use it all the time in flight with a external Gilsson
antenna tucked under the sunshade. Make sure your airline allows it - many
do.
Never put anything small and valuable in a checked bag. An acquantance
bought a Quest on my recommendation and put it in a checked bag. Gone - and
he had it only a couple weeks.

I agree. I've never had my GPS given a second glance. The screeners are
used to seeing all sorts of electronic devices. The baggage handlers,
who work out of sight, are used to it also, and can easily relieve you of
them. Keep it in your carry-on bag. Never put anything valuable in your
checked bags.

Never had a problem with my 2610, which doesn't have any batteries..! Had
a few raised eyebrows about the beanbag mount on occasion though, it
apparently looks like gunshot on the x-ray..! (Maybe it is..!)
