Thanks for the replies the suggestions about batteries I'll checkout.
Using and etrex legend. Snowshoeing in the Sawtooths in Idaho. Been
10-20 below to single digit highs this week. Hoping for a bit warmer
though.

I use nothing by Lithium (non-rechargable) AAs in my hiking GPSRs.
Better low whether performance, much longer life and about half the
weight on a per cell basis.
