C330 in TV Commercial...fake voice guidance?
|

| I dunno about you guys, but *my* 330 has never said "Highway"
anything. *Should* my unit be saying "Highway 22" or "Interstate 78"?
Am I missing something?

Mine doesn't say anything more than "Turn right (left) in xxx".
Street/Highway/Road names are displayed on top of the screen though.
I haven't seen the commercial. Where have you seen it?

| I believe that is a commercial for the c340 which does have the text to
speech option you are referring to.

It's been on most of the major networks in my area (NE PA), but I've
also seen it quite a bit on CNN too.

Thanks Darrel -
I believe you're right; now that I've seen the C340 it loooks
identical to the C330 unit.
Well, at least I'm not missing a feature on my C330 - would be nice to
have that available as a ROM upgrade though...

Yes, maybe.
I always get a kick out of the pleasant female voice giving you directions.
No relation to reality at all. Perhaps they will eventually get it right
with the "Nagging Wife" voice and monologue (which definitely does not
tell you "recaclulating" when you miss a turn) :-)

But unlike the wife, there's a volume knob and an OFF BUTTON....;)

How true!

| Sorry to 'barge' into discussion, but...
We don't own any gps system, so I am trying to do a little research prior to
possibly purchasing.
My biggest question (based on missing turns because I'm on the far left side
of a 4-lane road and see my exit to
the right as I zip by at xxx mph.) How much advance notice of a 'turn
right' does a typical system give?
Thanks in advance,
Ace

Might be an issue with situational awareness. If you glance at the GPS
occasionally and think about what you're doing the voice guidance
becomes kind of surpuflouous.
You're not that little fat faced, blond haired, teenage girl that's
always about six inches off my bumper are you? The one that looks
annoyed, is twirling her hair with her finger, and singing along to
something on the radio?
Jack (no insults intended, maybe a little humor even) :> )

| Ace, my C330 apparently does it by time rather than distance - in
other words, if you are going faster you get a warning earlier. The
first warning is usually about 1/2 mile ahead at highway speeds, and
the final one just about the point that you would be getting on the
exit ramp.
That is all from memory, of course. But the mileage to the next turn
is always displayed in the lower right hand corner of this unit, and
its easy to tell when you have to make a move.

I use my SP3 on routes I know well for exactly that reason. Even thought I
may travel 200 miles on a single interstate, the interstate goes through
several places where you need to be in the right, left or middle lane.
Rather than have to try and fight traffic and get over, the Streetpilot will
give me a good warning to be in the lane 1/2 a mile or more ahead at 65 mph.

| Jack,
No insult taken, but some of the things I was taught:
If you can't tell a joke, DON'T! Plus, if you don't have anything to add,
......
But thanks anyhow. Perhaps some of the other posters will be a bit more
helpful.

| Thank you Dave (and Bob),
I was hoping that was the situation, but just didn't feel comfortable
'assuming'. Like you, I have often found my view blocked by truck traffic,
etc. missing signs, etc.
