Author Vista C panning map

I think that when I first started using it (yesterday), when on
the map page, the rocker would pan the map in whatever
direction. Now, it pans a pointer with location info for the
purpose of marking a waypoint. I would prefer to be able to pan
or move the map. What did I change to this behavior?

Are you sure that it behaved differently yesterday? I can't speak for the
"C" but my on standard Vista the thumb switch always moves the pointer first
and the map only pans when the pointer hits the limit close to the edge of
the screen, whereupon the pointer is anchored and the map pans in the
opposite direction. If you want to pan the map back then you first have to
move the pointer to the opposite side of the screen. It's a trick to get
two movements out of one control without having to switch between cursor and
panning.

No! I had just changed from the plain yellow eTrex so it may be
just that I was used to it doing that way.

????????!!!!!
The plain yellow etrex neither has maps to pan nor a thumbswitch to pan them
with - so exactly what was it that you were doing that way?
