Author eTrex Legend: Any Luck with Serial-To-USB Adapter??

Hi All,

I just got my first GPS unit (Garmin eTrex Legend) for Christmas. I'm
having a blast with it. But my laptop doesn't have a serial port.

I do have a serial-to-USB adapter cable. Has anyone had any success
using that with their eTrex Legend?

I did at one time (since gave the Legend to a fellow hiker).

If possible, buy the adapter from the seller of the item you plan to use
it with, so you have recourse if it does not work..

Yes, I recently bought an inexpensive generic adapter from sewelldirect.com
and it hooked up my eTrex Legend to a Dell PC USB port with no problem at
all.

And if you have a Mac, I have had success with a KeySpan adapter.

Yes, I have a generic one with my Dell. The order of sequence can be
your issue. Don't have your Serial to USB cable plugged in. Install the
adapter's drivers FIRST. Reboot. Connect your Etrex to your USB cable.
Now, turn on your Etrex. Plug your cable into your laptop. Your Etrex
should work fine now.

Once you have rebooted connect your Serial to USB cable. Turn on your
Legend.
