I heard that Garmin will be coming out with the G60cx and G76cx using
the SiRFIII. Just wondering if this will be compatible with the
existing Garmin Mapsource products. If so, will they be able to be
run in SiRFIII mode (sensitivity wise) ? I understand that the maps
use NMEA?
Thanks

You're mixing a lot of things here, it's difficult to understand what
you are actually asking.
I'll try...
Yes Garmin will probaly bring out the 60, 76, and 96 series with a SiRF
III chip, they are not officially announced yet by Garmin though so it
could still be quite some time before they actually hit the stores.
Nobody knows what maps they will be delivered with but if it goes like
the new automotive GPSes from Garmin they will be delivered with a new
type of map but still be able to run the old maps (for the maps it
doesn't matter if the device is SiRF, the old devices cannot be
upgraded to SiRF!)
NMEA has nothing really to do with the maps themself or with SiRF, but
yes those new 60 76 and 96 will most likely be able to output NMEA

Thanks everyone. Hm, you've covered most of what I was asking. I
read somewhere that GPS maps use only NMEA or Garmin's own protocol. I
guess that info was incorrect.

Based on my information, I was concerned that if I go out and buy a
Garmin unit w/SiRF III, say a USB unit, that I will be able to use it
with my current Mapsource maps. I am looking forward to using SiRF III
because this new technology allows the GPS to be very sensitive and
even to be used indoors.

Cheers,
Happy New Year
