Thanks! Downloaded.

I wonder whether they fixed the track point gaps as well.

Please let me know after you've tested it, Hans-Georg! Going back to 3.5
after an upgrade loses ALL the settings, so I'll let you pioneer this
one and report back. (The upgrade keeps the settings, it's just going
backwards that wipes them).

Well, I'm not Hans-Georg, but I recorded a track log with 3.80 today,
and it appears they have not fixed the track log bug. At least not for
the "auto" mode. I used the "auto" mode and "More Often" for the
interval. It still cuts corners. I didn't try the "time" or
"distance" modes, but I would be surprised if Garmin fixed those, but
not the "auto" mode.

Time to send another email to techsupp@garmin.com and let them know how
pleased we are that they *still* haven't fixed this issue.

Regards,
Roy

What do you mean by "settings"?

Dennis.

All the options - on/off road, data units, what data fields appear on
which screens, which order the screens come up in .. basically almost
everything (the power on message survived OK!. I think the maps probably
survived OK too.) Oh, and the odometer reset to zero, the tracklogs
cleared, etc. etc. Really, really not something you want to do it you
can avoid it.

Ah! I thought you meant settings which are not resetteable by the user. I
agree though that this would be a damn nuiscance.

John,

I know, I know, but there was still hope, meanwhile dissolved.

Still haven't installed the upgrade, was too busy while the GPS
has probably contributed to keeping me alive. Had to do a
landing in a Cessna 172 on a car track between fields. The
actual landing was done without the GPS, but the little Garmin
GPSMAP 76C on the windshield has helped me a lot before that
emergency landing and may have saved my life.

Do you reckon Garmin actually USE their products before relasing new
software. There are definite signs of Microsoft Support here, same
attitudes, same deathly silence!

Dennis,

the risk is that Garmin acquires the big company attitudes. That
would be sad.

Holger,

I wrote a page at www.michna.com/notlandung.htm about the whole
event, but unfortunately it is all in German. Haven't found the
time to translate it yet and am not sure whether I'll ever find
it. Let's see.

In short, I flew visually from southern Germany to the north in
poor, but flyable weather and got caught in a cloud trap in the
middle German mountain formation called Thüringer Wald near a
place called Eisenach (the place where Martin Luther dwelled in
the Wartburg castle).

I had a large system of valleys all to myself and could
leisurely fly up and down, left and right, from one valley into
the next and the one thereafter, but all attempts to leave the
whole area failed at impenetrable cloud walls, even my later
attempts to fly back south. Altogether I criss-crossed the area
for about 2 hours. Had never experienced anything like this
before.

I'm planning to add the GPS track to the web page tomorrow,
which probably looks like a spider web.

Very unfortunately this is one of the few areas in Germany
without any airfield, so I eventually got used to the thought
that I would have to land somewhere. So I spent the second of
the two hours checking out roads, fields, and farm tracks.

I learned that this is a time-consuming task, because often you
can see certain types of obstacles only from low altitude. I
ended up checking two stretches of road, which turned out to be
unsuitable due to trees, and a track between fields, leading
from a road to the edge of the forest, and decided to use that.

Called up air traffic control, explained my situation and
intentions and asked them for their telephone number, in case
the radio would no longer be able to make contact on the ground
between the mountains. They were very concerned and wanted to
help, but couldn't. But they could sense my total calmness and
were at least quite happy that I didn't panic.

I'm a bush pilot with most of my experience gained in bush
flying in Africa, so landing the plane on such a track is almost
a normal landing for me. I strived for maximum precision and
landed the plane perfectly on the narrow track that allowed less
than 2 ft leeway for the wheels, left or right.

After the landing I called up air traffic control on the mobile
phone and told them that everything went well.

Then some funny things happened. The police came and looked,
several other cars stopped and drove up to the plane, out of
curiosity, then the local press got wind and reporters turned
up.

I called a taxi and fled into a really nice hotel more or less
underneath the Wartburg castle.

The next morning I went back to the plane and prepared the
takeoff, which is easier than the landing, but it is more
difficult to keep the plane precisely in the tracks under full
power.

That day even the local TV station showed up and interviewed
me---a somewhat doubtful way to fame, as my situation wasn't
exactly something to be proud of.

To cut the long story short, the takeoff went exactly as
planned, and I arrived at my final destination one day late.

Without the Garmin GPSMAP 76C at the windshield everything would
have been much more difficult. It is so good to always exactly
know the position and also see all the already known tracks.

I gave it a go .. basically 3.80 is way better than 3.70, although it
still seems to drop ~1% of the expected trackpoints. It looks like they
are there on the handset, but if I download the track with mapsource,
Oziexplorer, tracklogs, or anything else, there are a few places where
one point, or sometimes two, are missing.

3.70 was losing 40% of the trackpoints, so things are better, but still
not fixed (3.50 misses none of them) this asking for a point every 10m.
It may just be a USB transfer issue, but if so it is awfully consistent
- it is always the same points that are not transferred (if they really
exist on the handset - they do appear to!)

I have 3.80 with my Garmin Legend and use a serial cable. I have never lost
any data from one to the other. I am not sure if that's where the problem is
for those using USB to connect. Good Luck
