| I am looking for my first GPS. I have used a marine Garmin a little. I can
usually do the research on my own but there are so many choices. First of
all it needs to be durable becuase it will spend alot of its life mounted on
the handlebars of my motorcycle. Secondly it has to be able to be hooked up
to a laptop. Finally I would like it to be a mapping GPS as long as I can
download the maps and install them through the computer I don't want to have
to buy preprogrammed cards. It doesn't need to be color. I want it all and
not pay for it but I would like to stay around $200 if possible.

Has already been awnsered in alt.satellite.gps
For that price you will not find a new GPS, you'll have to go second hand
for something like a GPS V
For that application (motorcycle) the only option is a Garmin as they are
waterproof and tested for vibrations.
The best motorcycle GPS is a Streetpilot 2610 (or a GPSMAP 276C for the
extra buttons) but those are several multiples of $200. For the Streetpilot
there are extensions to get extra buttons:

Seconded; I use a 2610 on my bike and it is perfect for the job. I even
heard of one that had been in a crash and bounced down the road, it still
worked..! (The bike didn't though <g> )

My 2610 has survived a fairly low speed crash, it didn't actually bounce
thanks to a good mount (only a minor scratch on a corner) it's still working
and was still on after the crash the bike had $3,500 damage though
(insurance is a good thing :) )
