how to insert owner identity in firmware
|
|
|
| Does anybody knows how to insert the owners name in the firmware of an etrex
(Summit)?
A few years ago I stumbled by coincidence on a newsthread about this, but
I'm not able to find it back.

I have the Etrex Legend. Maybe it's the same. When you go to the Main Menu,
click on the Options button. Changing the owner info is the only option
available.

| I don't find any option to input owner info.
If I recall my memory well, there was a little patch utility available to
replace in the firmware standard text in the startup screen (ie "Garmin
Ltd.") with the name of the owner.

This may be what you're looking for,
http://www.milvang.no/gps/gpswarn.html
I have not used this or do I know anybody that has.
If you try it, keep us informed your success (or not).

Only supports Legend and Vista - these models already have a User Info page
so the hack is pointless!

Not entirely so..when GPSWarn was first brought out the Legend didn't
have the user info page and it about the only way of entering your
details into the Legend. Then in a later firmware update Garmin brought
out the User info page as a method of entering owner details. However if
someone decides to nick your legend there is nothing to prevent them
entering *their* details into *your* legend from the user info page, but
they will not be able to change the details you have input using GPSWarn

I used something prior to this software program which was the old
edit-with-hex-editor method. Worked well, but this program should make the
job easier. I recall it worked with the eMap and the early eTrex versions.
Good luck!

Good point - although someone mean enough to find your GPS and hang on to it
probably won't be over bothered by the nag screen!

Unless they can't read, as well as being a thief.

Proper convention for a signature separator is "-- " (note; the trailing
space is required).

He used the proper separator, including the space.

It didn't come through on the article delivered my my newsreader
(MT-Newswatcher). If it had, it wouldn't have been included in the
quoted text. I just retrieved the article again and it _still_ has no
space character following the "--".

You might be lucky and they would sell it on to someone who's conscience
was bothered by a nag screen (maybe that's wishful thinking ?)

Since when is this a convention? I've been using Usenet for about 13 years
and have never heard of such a thing. This is as ludicrous as the top/bottom
posting argument.

Have a look at any discussion of "netiquette"

I like this excerpt:
"Messages and articles should be brief and to the point. Don't wander
off-topic, don't ramble and don't send mail or post messages solely to point
out other people's errors in typing or spelling. These, more than any other
behavior, mark you as an immature beginner."
Or this one:
"If you should find yourself in a disagreement with one person, make your
responses to each other via mail rather than continue to send messages to
the list or the group. If you are debating a point on which the group might
have some interest, you may summarize for them later."

Only the French would come up with a "netiquette" for Usenet, that is so
outof date as to be useless........

| Thanks for your help but...
I own an eTrex Summit soft version 3.30, and apparently all screen text is
coded in a way, memap is not finding any useful texts and inspection with an
hex editor either doesn't find any useful text to replace.

Neither are ridiculous and both are convention. I suggest you take the
time to read a few FAQ documents.

It's always been the convention. That way a proper newsreader will
strip the sig from the quoted text if you just hit 'reply'.
