Sitting on City Select

| I bought a copy of Garmin's City Select for my new Legend C the other
day, but haven't activated it yet. Here's why:
Garmin's policy (http://www.garmin.com/unlock/update.jsp) is that if
you "activate" a product after the "release date" of a newer version,
then you get the newer version as part of your purchase price. I read
(some where) that they were targeting an update of City Select once
per year. They're previous release date was 6/15/04. It seems
reasonable to assume that they're next release date would be some where
near 6/15/05.
So, here's my problem: I can wait patiently for Garmin to announce the
new version and then activate my current version and get the new one
when it ships, or I can activate now and not be very happy when they
announce the new version (if it's fairly soon) because I'd have to pay
for it, even if it was only a couple of days later.
What have the rest of you done? Does Garmin publish a roadmap of
future releases?
Joe
P.S. Is anyone from Garmin monitoring this newsgroup? If so, I have a
few comments:
1. Published roadmaps are a good thing for you, and your customers.
2. They provide data that allows customers to make informed choices.
3. They encourage customers to make software purchases sooner. If I
know that on 6/15/05 a new version of City Select will be released, I
would want to purchase now and wait to activate (to get the new
version) and avoid any potential price increase.
4. Leaving your customers in the dark leaves them feeling distant, out
of communcation, in the dark and even taken advantage of.

| Sorry to wreck it for you but you may as well stop waiting because
their policy is as follows:
"If you purchased a locked MapSource product ON or AFTER the release
date of an update, you are entitled to an unlock on the newer version
of that product for free"
PURCHASE date is relevant NOT ACTIVATION date

| I think if you dig a little deeper, you'll see that that's more to it.
According to the "details" link
(http://www.garmin.com/support/faqs/...ography&lang=en),
"If you ORIGINALLY & NEWLY unlocked a NEW locked MapSource CD-ROM
product ON or AFTER the release date of an update for that same
product, you are eligible to unlock on that specific update what you
unlocked on the original for no charge. In other words, you can update
to the latest data for free!". They some times use the terms
"purchase" and "activate" interchangably, but according to the support
tech I spoke with, it's the "activation" date that matters.

I went ahead and activated since I needed the maps now. Garmin has offered
pro-rated discount coupons in the past for recent purchases that were
activated in the few months prior to a new release, so I figured that would
be good enough for me.
I have never seen them publish a product roadmap, although most products do
get announced a month or two prior to release.
