I am thinking about buying the Vista. Anyone have any pro's and con's. I
plan to use it mostly for camping and hiking and light backpacking.

Thanks in advance.

The Vista will be an outstanding choice for what you describe. If you
plan to buy topo maps to download to it, just be aware... a cloor unit
will be much more visible. The basic Vista is monochrome. Either the
Vista C or the GPSMAP 60C would be great choices.

Beware the smaller, cheaper units. If you hike a great distance, your
breadcrumb trail can "eat itself". This means when you run out of
memory, the earliest record of your trail (track) is deleted to make
room for the newest info. I have a friend who owns a Yellow Etrex and
his breadcrumb trail is continually eating itself on long ATV rides.

I don't like mine at all! If you are planning to use it in areas without
available mapping then I think that you will find that the basic yellow
etrex will perform rather better (the Vista processor is underpowered for
the extra burden placed on it). The monochrome screen is very difficult to
read and Garmin failed to include the option of turning off the background
shading applied to National Park areas on MapSource products, which makes
map features almost impossible to read unless you hack the .img files with a
hex editor to cripple the background. The compass is useless for critical
navigation (it's too sensitive to being out of level) so you will still need
to carry a real one.

Other people's opinions suggest that the colour models (Vista C and
particularly the 60C) are much better but you will have to invest in City
Select maps in order to use Auto Routing, which is not enabled in MetroGuide
products.
