Author Vista locking up/shutting down

My etrex Vista has increasingly been misbehaving - locking up or shutting
down following keypress operations. For example turning off when I hold
down the page button to toggle the compass on and off. Not a battery
contact problem since it also happens when on external power. Now it has
increasingly been locking up when I try to activate a route for navigation.
Sometimes just leaving a clear screen, occasionally a single line down the
middle and once this afternoon a pattern of horizontal dark bars all the way
down the screen. In each case the only solution is to remove the batteries
and start again. On a couple of occasions it has not locked up but has
disabled the map display - everything else was there but paging the display
skipped pass the map every time.

It took me about six attempts to start navigation leaving a friends house in
Bristol this afternoon. Fortunately I wasn't driving and I had a paper map
so we were able to find our way but it was very annoying! I have tried
several master resets with no improvement and in desperation I've just
reinstalled the firmware. It's probably going to be a few days before I
find out whether that has had any effect so in the meantime does this
behaviour strike a chord with any other user? In particular does it sould
like it's going to be expensive?!! The receiver is not yet a year old but
unfortunately I don't have a receipt so it wouldn't be a warranty repair
unless Garmin Europe are feeling charitable (as sometimes, thankfully they
seem to do!).

Our Vista did the same thing -- at first only occasionally, but eventually
it got to the point that whenever we tried to turn the compass on or off
with a press-and-hold of the Page button, it was guaranteed to shut down.

When the click-stick on the Vista started misbehaving (in addition to the
shutdowns described above), we decided to send it in for repairs. We had
had it for nine months at the time. When I called them to get a Return
Authorization number for it, they did ask how old the unit was, but they
didn't ask for proof of purchase. I asked them if I needed to send a copy
of the receipt, but they said it wasn't necessary. So give it a try -- it
can't hurt to ask.

Less than a week after we sent it in, they sent us a new unit that has
behaved perfectly ever since.
