Author Broke the glass on my eMap

Has anybody here ever broken the case of an Garmin eMap? I broke
mine. The device works perfectly, but doesn't look good.

I guess I have to send it to Garmin for repair, but I'd like to
know about any experience with this situation before I do that.

Hm, no reply. I'm asking Garmin now.

But one other question: does anybody have a defective eMap with
a good case that I could buy for the purpose of swapping cases?
If that would be much cheaper for me than sending the device to
Garmin, I'd prefer it.

And yet another question. Is there any way to repair the broken
glass (actually plastic, I believe)? Like putting some liquid
glue on the fissure? It doesn't have to be perfect---the device
is old and serves mainly as a backup and spare.

Why not open the unit up
and remove the broken plastic
and replace with a new piece.

Harware stores have clear plastic
sheets they'll cut to size.

Thanks, had already thought about that, but the entire upper
eMap case pretty much looks like one piece to me. I don't know
how I could cut out the "glass".

Perhaps it could be done with a red-hot knife, by melting the
plastic, but I was first looking for a safer solution.

It IS one piece. Use a Dremel with a fine saw blade and go slowly, it
tends to bend (since it is designed for cutting out plastic pieces for
model trucks and houses, there you don't need to go through long
cuts). Make sure you cool the blade enough. In the edges, drill a hole
with a fine driller first to avoid the brake extends. Then take Uhu
Hart to glue the new piece in place. If you need more help send pm.

Holger,

he, great idea! I happen to have a Dremel; nice tool.

Now I have to find out how to open the case in the first place,
to remove the electronics. Do you happen to know that? Do I have
to use force? Is the eMap glued together?

All newer Garmins are "soldered" together, so you have to "crack" it
open and seal it afterwards again. You could try to cut the window out
without opening the case. To do that, mount the Dremel with a dental
drill type cutter in a adjustable stand and move the case under it.
Use a vacum cleaner to avoid plastic pieces in the case.

Holger,

thanks a lot again for your good information!

I'm thinking more of cracking it open first, so I can work on
the case better.

I have an Emap with a bad backlight and notice a few post on opening the
case. Seem that it is plastic welded together and one person used a hot
knife. Another is copied below;

The emap was malfunctioning so I decided to risk it, it was unuseable
anyway.
With a blowdryer I softened the outside a little and then pried it
open, some of the clamps did break but if I'm successfull in fixing
(looking pretty bleak) it I'm gonna glue it back together.

Bill,

sounds OK to me. Just force it open and later use plastic glue,
and not too much, so you can repeat the procedure if needs be.

Biggest remaining problem is to find and select the proper piece
of acrylic glass.
