Mapsource updates - grrr...

OK, I bit the bullet - I bought a GPS18, spoke to Garmin yesterday who
assured me I could install the maps on my 2620 and update them when my
update CDs arrived.
Great - perhaps the update process isn`t such a pain in the XXX as people
had said...
So, last night, I battled through the install process and all went OK.
Its still a pain in the XXX, with plenty of confusing bullshit about
unlocks, vouchers and coupon codes, but we got there eventually.
This morning, I was surprised to find the update CDs already on my
doormat - OK, so perhaps this is the legendary after-sales people have
spoken of.
Went through the install process, got right to the end, and it says i`m
not eligible for an update.
WTF ?
As it came to the end of the install process, it listed the 2 units, with
CS:EU unlocked for both the GPS18 and the 2620, as well as CN:NA for the
2620, so all looked correct.
I`ve since gone through the unlock process again from within mapsource
using the original 25 digit code as it states on the back of the update
CD, no dice.
Of course, I am unable to contact them as its the weekend.
I really *REALLY* XXXXing hate Garmin.

I finally got this sussed out - you need to apply for a NEW unlock code,
despite what the back of the update CD tells you to do.
You can follow a link from the unlock page to look up your details, then
follow the update path by clicking on the software you want to update.
Eventually you get a new code.

This still stands. The company has as big a problem with its shite
software unlock maze as I do with their map sale policy.

| I agree the unlock sucks but its not garmins fault. I had a long talk
with a rep ince and she claimed the people whpo supply the map data
require that ..... garmin only maps like topo canada are neiter copy
protected nor locked (with probably pretty low sales ;)

Oh please. You fell for this lie? Like Garmin is the itty bitty company
which is helpless in the face of big bad mapping corporation.
Good grief - what people will believe.

|
| yes because why else are some maps not copyprotected and dont have
activation codes while others do?

Give me a break! What difference does it make what their reason is? They
have to lock it because if they don't people steal it. Do you complain that
stores put locks on their doors and put up cameras to keep people from
shoplifting? It's exactly the same thing and they have to lock the software
for exactly the same reason. Put the blame on the software thieves not on
Garmin.
By the way, if the locking wasn't a mandate from the actual map supplier why
wouldn't all of their products be locked and not just some of them (the ones
who mandated it)?
