Author Adding Great Britain to a Garmin GPS

First, I am really a novice at this.
But I am going to be in Great Britain traveling from the U.S. I want
to get a GPS that will cover the U.S. and be able to add the U.K.,
primarily Scotland to a portable device.
I'm looking for relatively inexpensive, and as best as I can figure
out, I need to buy a U.S. loaded GPS and add the U.K. Here's where I
have the problem.
It appears that Garmin only sells a CD with maps that cover all of
Europe for about $400. Is there a way to get just the U.K. to add to
the GPS? If so, how?
Also, if so, which is your recommendation for a GPS which shows maps.
Thanks in advance.

No, they don't sell individual regions/countries, you have to buy all of
it. I had the same problem in reverse when I visited the US, I had to buy
*all* of North America, when I only wanted California and Arizona..!

I use the Garmin SP2610 www.garmin.com/products/sp2610/ but that may be
too expensive for you. Try the 60CS or 76CS handhelds, they should do what
you want ok.

The cheapest way i`ve found to obtain the european maps is to buy a GPS18
receiver with nroute, which comes with City Select Europe on CD. You can
use the free unlock to use it on another Garmin device, but the first
unlock is tied to the GPS18 receiver.

Try http://www.aspidshop.com and search for "nroute" - its the cheapest
place I could find (based in Portugal)

Garmin have a XXXXed up pricing policy that means the maps alone cost 50%
more than the same maps with yet more hardware you don`t want or need.

Thanks. It seems strange that these GPS companies don't sell
individual country data. You'd think if they'd market a single country
for $40-$50 they would wind up ahead rather than sell 15 countries for
$300.
I've decided I don't really need the information at the prices Garmin
sells it for.
