Street Pilot III - auto route
|
|
| Glenn Godden 2005-07-10, 4:55 pm |
| My wife is a Realtor and employs her Garmin Street Pilot III extensively in
her real estate practice, she would like to load a series of addresses of
homes to preview and have the Garmin unit auto-route the homes for best
track. Is there a method with either the unit or the PC software to achieve
this function? If so please advise on the procedure.

You will need to=20
1. Install Mapsource and City Navigator v4.x (both comes with the unit) =
to
PC
2. Select the BLOCK's (area) you want to have detailed map (street =
address
level) and SAVE/LOAD to Street Pilot III.
You will need the Memory Card in order to store the data, and I assume =
you
have all the CABLES came with SP III.
I too have Street Pilot III, and as a photographer sometime I have to
shoot some wedding in other cities/states, and the SP III have served me
well.

I don't know as auto route with do what the OP is asking though. I don't
have the SP, but the 76CS. If it works the same I believe that she'd
have to manually layout the sequence of waypoints and then let routing
take over from there.

Auto-routing will depend on the map program (City Navigator comes with =
SP
III does auto-routing when MetroGuide can only do auto-routing on PC not
Garmin itself).
With SP III, and City Navigator v4.x, she just need to ENTER a home
address, tell Garmin to route to the address and it will do all the =
talking
and pointing to the direction.
Anyway, the City Navigator v4.x (the newer version may come with newer
v5.x or whatever) doesn't have new routes so it may drive you around and
around. Sometime, when get close to the location you can just use OFF =
ROUTE
(?) and follow the arrow instead of auto-routing.

Mine will do that (except talk) but it won't take several waypoints and
automatically route you the best/fastest way between all of them without
laying them out manually in a route ahead of time. I believe that's what
the original poster was asking, but I've been wrong before. ;-)

The Street Pilot III he has does the auto-routing automatically, with
SP-III you just need to enter the location where you want to go, then it
will do all auto-routing by it own.
Auto-routing means you can turn to different street than the one it
recommend, and it *will* recalculate starts from whatever street you are =
on
to the destination. Or it will redraw the route automcatically (that's =
why
I end up with 3 Garmins from oldest -> newer -> Street Pilot III Color).

Right, and my 76cs will do that as well. But, to re-re-state, I believe
the OP was asking to just define several waypoints and have the unit
automatically route *all* of them in one continuous route in the most
direct way.
No unit I know of will do that. You need to lay out the waypoints in the
order that you want them first.
And if that's not clear enough, I give up and if the OP doesn't come
back and clarify - I give up.

IC, and that was what I did on my old Garmin with no auto-routing
features. I had to layout the map, marked all the waypoints then =
followed
the marked routes. In order to create the waypoints (the way I know) you
will have to use SOFTWARE to create the waypoints then upload to GPS.
It was many years ago when I tried older Mapsource which didn't have
auto-routing feature (haven't tried v6.x yet to know) and I had to marked
each waypoint manually. And I also used third party map (MS Street ???)
which has auto-routing feature, and was compatible with Garmin (I don't
remember all small detail what I did... saved to hard drive first then
import to Mapsource or directly to GPS ????)
With SP-III, I just create and save as ADDRESS(es) then route to =
different
address's. =20
