| Has anyone used the National Geographic topo maps with the Vista. I did not
think you could but I just read the packaging and they said you could. In
fact they had a picture of the Vista on the packaging. Thanks for the info.

As with many 3rd party programs, you can exchange routes, tracks, and
waypoints between National Geographic's Topo program and the eTrex Vista or
other GPS receivers. You can not load the maps onto the Vista.
Note: If you have a Vista C, you can not currently use the National
Geographic software with it as they do not yet support the Garmin USB
protocol, which is the only connector on the Vista C.

| You can download tracks/waypoints from the Vista to the software. You
can create waypoints in the software and upload them to the Vista.
What you cannot do is upload the maps to the Vista ...

| Sounds like it would not be useful to me as I already have the Garmin Topo
maps. I did like the 3D function that is out there.
Garmin has nice products but they really need to put some effort on the
software.

It all depends on what you want from the software. Garmin Topo is OK
if you want to download topographic maps to the GPS. I owned it, but
it was too limited for me. I have National Geographic's Topo! and
used it in the past for analyzing tracks. Now I use other tools
(GarTrip, TopoFusion, Google Earth) to analyze tracks after my trips.
I do like the Garmin MetroGuide series. It has downloadable maps with
information on services, transportation, etc. in the areas covered. I
use MG Europe when in Europe and MG USA/North America for here in the
states. Great to be tooling along (I do long bike rides), and to be
able to query the GPS for the nearest restaurant, hotel, or whatever.

From the information I read, Metroguide is a fine product *but* up to =
the
current latest version (v.6 ?) MetroGuide still can only do auto-routing =
on
computer *but* not Garmin.
So if you don't have Garmin with auto-routing feature or using with
computer then it's ok, but using it with auto-routing unit you will =
disable
the auto-routing (or may confuse the GPS).
