Is mapping software interchangeable between units? Can a Tomtom use a
Streetpilot maps, etc?

No, virtually never. Maybe between standalone units of the same brand.
But never from a standalone unit like the Streetpilot to a unit that
has a Pocket PC or Palm OS operating system.

There are some ways to interchange maps between some units, but it is a
difficult process. For most of us ordinary mortals, the simple answer is to
use Gqarmin mapping software with Garmin units, Magellan mapping software
with Magellan units.

However, there are some utility prgrams on the web that will allow the
translation of track and waypoint files from one barns/model to another.

In general the answer might be YES and NO

NO, you might not be able to load map designed for Tom Tom to Garmin GPS =
or
other way around.

YES, if the GPS connects to computer and it can detect (support,
communicate) the GPS, then it's possible. Example, there are dozen(s) of
third party map softwares those work with most (of not all) popular GPS
devices those have option to connect to notebook, Palm OS, Poacket PC =
etc..
