Possible bug in 2610
|
|
|
| I'm having a problem with my newly acquired 2610 and wanted to see if those
that know a bit more than I do have an explanation.
I live in the Wash D.C. area and in at least 4 locations, I can't get the
unit to do the following:
It absolutely refuses to calculate a route that has a right exit that loops
back over your current road to go to the left. For example: You are
traveling north (usually a divided highway or interstate) and want to go
west at an upcoming intersection. This intersection requires a right exit,
the ramp goes over or under the East/West highway, curves back to the West
going over or under the North/South highway and then merges on the West
bound road. My unit absolutely will not calculate this route.
I've tried every setting of shortest, fastest, custom I can think of. Reset
everything to default. I can name at least 4 different intersections in my
area where it will not do this. I knows the ramps are there, they are on the
maps and track properly when I take them. And once I'm on the ramp and it
has no other choice, it will decide that it must use the ramp and route it
accordingly afterwards.
The route in one case last week was 40% shorter--8 miles vs. the 13 miles it
calculated--by taking the ramp.
The desktop software will do the calculations correctly. But if I'm in the
car and tell it to take me home, it will backtrack and add both miles and
time to it's calculations to avoid those types of ramps.
For those of you in the Washington D.C. area, one specific route:
South on Rt1 leaving Old Town Alexandria. Ask it for a route that will take
you to Andrews AFB. Baring traffic, the shortest and fastest route is across
the Woodrow Wilson bridge. Mine puts me on 95 OK--going in the wrong
direction, back towards Springfield!!! It takes me to the Telegraph Road
exit, goes through back streets to get back on Rt 1 about a half mile behind
me--going North bound. Then takes me through the district and out
Pennsylvania Avenue. (And it's not the construction. The same basic ramps
are still there and it tracks them perfectly when transiting them. So it
knows they are there.)
Anybody have any ideas as to what's going on?
Thanks

I leave that one unchecked anyway.

I just simulated a route from Alexandria to Andrews on my 2610. It
routed me onto the ramp you mentioned and then onto I495 (towards
Baltimore) across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. Are you sure all the
detailed maps for the route are loaded onto your CF card? The problem
you're having could be because some detailed maps are missing and your
2610 has to use the base map in certain areas.

Yes there is a bug, I have phoned Garmin Tech Support about it ...
The bug is in simuation mode but not on every route .. They were
supposedly going to contact their Tech Engineers in the USA to bring
out a new firmware to correct the problem but they haven't released
one and it's been well over 2 months since it was reported.

I found a similar bug in my earlier software version of StreetPilot III. The
work around that I used is to use a "way point" rather than "route". So
instead of using "route', I pick the destination as a way point and just
navigate there.

Yes, I've found a similar bug too. I'd planned a route to the south of
France. Even in the mapsource planning and subsequent simulation I was
getting a problem navigating through Rouen. My problem almost seemed
the opposite of yours. I wanted to go straight on over a junction
overpass but the software kept taking me off the slip road to the
right and round and round the roundabout below.
I cured the simulation by putting additional waypoints in the route.
However, in the middle of a wet night on my motorbike my unit took me
off the road onto the roundabout anyway!
Clearly not foolproof. If they have bugs like that on the shuttle
landing software they'll probably land in Angola!

| Nope, got all the maps.
Besides--since you're local you'll know what I'm talking about, it also does
it north bound on 97 when trying to go west bound on highway 100 near the
BWI airport, and it does it going north bound on South Capital street trying
to West on 395. It had me going all the way up to the mall and turning
around to come back down!
There was one other location locally but I can't remember where that was
right now.
I haven't had the time to try it in simulation mode, just for real in the
vehicle. I'll try that when I get a chance to see if it's different.

| Do you have the phone number handy to their tech people?
I'd like to call them and give them some specifics on this and see what the
status is.
Thanks

T.O.,
I'm not local but I simulated the two routes you mention above (i.e.,
north on 97 to 100 west and north on S. Capitol St. to 395 West)on my
2610. Both routes work perfectly for me. I don't have the routing
problems you describe. I'm using City Navigator version 6 and firmware
version 4.30. Are you using the same map and firmware versions?
Since I'm not having the problems you describe, I wonder if there is
some setting that is causing your problems. I don't think the
unspecified software bug others have mentioned is the culprit since I am
not having the same problem although, I suppose, the bug could only
appear with certain setting combinations. Let me know what you discover.

| It works here too in simulator mode. The software on the computer works fine
too. Just not in the vehicle.
Yep, my versions are same and up to date.
I've tried for a month resetting everything I can find, but I must be
missing something.
I just made another post with a new and more properly defined subject
heading about the Custom Road Preferences. Maybe someone here can answer
that post and that might help me --especially if I knew what category a
'ramp' fell into, then I could play with those settings.
Thanks all.
