Start/stop of tracking?

| Hi,
Newbie GPS-user here. I have a Garmin Etrex Vista C, and I'm amazed by the
fact that it starts to track whenever it's turned on. Beeing a mountain
biker, I'd like to start and stop the tracking on the start and end of the
ride, while still having the GPS running. Thus eliminating the need to edit
the tracks afterwards. Is this possible. AND: The Mapsource-software is not
my friend. Is there any alternatives out there? The fact that you have to
select map-packs when looking at maps, and that it not just connects the
map-packs together makes no sense (this could of course be the coding of the
norwegian hiking maps I use).
Cheers,

Have you scrolled through the pages and set-up tracking properties on the
tracking page? Have you read the manual?
It's all in there, have a look

Does the manual really help? 2 weeks ago, I had to go to other state =
for
about a week, and decided to try to create the ROUTE (I did once 4-5 =
years
ago on my older Garmin model and it worked fine) on my Street Pilot III.
Cuz my eyes are no longer strong like used to to read through the whole
manual to find something I want to learn, so I downloaded the PDF manual =
to
use FIND command to locate and read the "ROUTE" and "WAYPOINT" also read =
the
Mapsourse HELP file etc..
I got my eyes filled with gummie (after lot of reading and trying) and
still didn't get the ROUTE to work. I just read someone pointed out to =
me
that it only work if I loaded to the Garmin GPS *not* the memory card, =
and I
think he is right (cuz my oldest Garmin which I tried doesn't have =
external
memory but 64M build-in memory, the 2nd and 3rd Garmin have external =
memory
but never tried on these 2 newer models).

I have the Garmin Rhino 120 and go hiking and mountain biking also. I am not
sure about the Etrex but this is what to do for the rhino and maybe its the
same. For the Rhino, first before you ride save the tracks from the GPS to
your PC and then clear all saved track on the GPS. Then after you finish a
ride, to save the track you just made then you go to the saved track log
menu and turn off the track logging. Then save the track that you made and
give it a name. Then restart the track logging for the next ride and when
your done go back to the track saving menu and select save. It should ask if
you want to save from the beginning of the entire log or from the last save
point. Select from the last save point and give it a new name.
Too bad it is not more automatic. It would be great if it was a simple
button click to start a new track.
I don't really like the Mapsource software either and the manuals are not
very complete, but there is a way to have all the map data on your hard
drive so you do not have to change to other Map CD's.
You have to reinstall Mapsource software so that it reads the map data from
your hard drive and not the CD.
Here is how to do it.
First make a backup of all your saved Mapsource files then uninstall all
your Mapsource software. You might also need to clear any Garnin info from
the registry and can easily be done with a program called regedit, how ever
I cant find a link to it so here are some other programs that should work .

http://www.majorgeeks.com/EasyCleaner_d414.html
Then you put your Mapsource install CD in the CD drive and when it asks to
install select cancel. Use My Computer and right click the Mapsource CD and
select Explore. Then copy all of the files to a folder on your hard drive.
Open that folder and then select then double click the setup.exe file.this
will install the Mapsource program and read the files from the hard drive.
Then place each other map cd of the same Mapsource software package in the
CD drive and copy the contents the same way (it should be just one or two
folders for each cd) and place them in the same folder that the first cd was
placed (where the setup.exe file was).
You should then be able to run Mapsource without the cds, just click the
proper map selection in the drop down menu.
If you have different Mapsource programs like I have (US Topo, Metro Guide
North America and US National Parks West) then it might be a bit more
difficult to get the other program to run from the hard drive. I was able
install and run US TOPO from the hard drive but when I tried to install
National Parks from the hard drive it asked for the CD, but then when I
canceled the installation and installed from the cd it let me run it from
the hard drive. The MetroGuide 6.0 software lets you install all the data to
the hard drive.
Good luck,
Lou
