Author Legend Patch antenna questions

My old Legend b/w broke after a fall. It still turns on and seems to
work except for reception.

I had to open it up anyway (to repair a crack in the casing
and replace the rubber/tape), so I took a look and found that
the heavy aluminium foil which covers the 'frame' on the reverse side
of the GPS (right behind the antenna) had a few holes.

What is the purpose of this foil? Is it absolutely necessary
for operation? Can it be replaced with normal household
aluminium foil (or stuff from a handicraft store)?

Nothing on the board seems actually broken. Where else would I look
for problems that cause the reception only to not work?

thanks
Mathias
