Author Dialog with Garmin on SP27xx

Inquiry:
I am disappointed. As a SP3 user, I was planning to purchase a SP2610 this
summer. The SP 2720 has additional features. When I talked to support I
was
told that I could not continue to do trip planning on a computer with the
2720. A 2710 would be a instant choice for me. I want to be able to do
trip planning on a computer.

Please tell me that you intend to produce a model like the 2610 in the 27xx
series.

RESPONSE from Garmin:

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. Although it may change in
the future, currently the 2720 is not shipping with any software because it
is preloaded. As I said, I cannot say for sure that this is going to
change, but is an issue that is being looked at. As for another 27XX unit,
to my knowledge there is nothing coming anytime in the near future. I hope
this will clear the issue up for you.

I have the 2720 and Mapsource Metroguide NA v6 ( I had the Metroguide for
the Rino 120). I installed the USB drivers for the 2720 and can now transfer
routes, tracks and waypoints (called Favorites on the 2720). The maps do not
seem to transfer, but the 2720 is preloaded so they are not needed. The
routes transfer, but they have to be recalculated. They seem to recalculate
along the same path most of the time if the calculation preferences on the
GPS and PC are set the same (Faster route, shorter or offroad and
avoidances). My waypoints stayed in the same order of the routes after
transferring and recalibrating. Also I was able to transfer waypoint names
up to 20 characters.
Maybe with the same version of map software on the PC as the 2720 the routes
would not need recalculation.

I have the 2620, and I disagree - the maps SHOULD be provided to allow
you to use them on a PC. The cheaper 2610 came with maps, so why not the
more expensive model.

Screwing customers over like this is why you see so many Mapsource
products on p2p networks - sure, you can`t upload them to a GPS unit,
but most people want to work in comfort rather than on a small LCD
screen.

I am still holding off on my purchase of a replacement unit. I would love
to make the jump to the 2720. I have the software on my PCs to manage the
waypoints and a copy of the CN7. I just am not comfortable with the
differences and have not heard any compeling reason to spend the extra. I
may stop by a retailer like Circus City to take a peak.

If you have mapsource with CN, you should be abele to use it at
calculate routs as normal.
It=B4s only moving om maps that requires a unlockcode.
