Author Topo PLUS streets?

I recently bought the Garmin eTrex Legend and Mapsource
MetroGuide software. Good stuff. But part of what I want to do
with this setup is lay trail for hashing.. For those of you who
aren't familiar with hashing, check out any search engine for
hash house harriers. Anyway.. hashing is generically known as
a drinking club with a running problem. And hashers love to get
shiggy (trails through woods, etc..)

What I would like to do is be able to map out a route that
includes both streets and off-street trails in parks, etc. The
MetroGuide doesn't understand trails along streams etc. and
tries to figure out a street route to the next waypoint, rather
than just going through the park. I'm assuming topo maps would
let me do that, but wouldn't have the street layouts? Is there
a way to combine the two, or lay one over the other so you can
see both? Is there software that includes the two? I'm
basically new at this, and don't want to reinvent a wheel that
is already out there..
