My dad's 2610 came with city nav. v7, can I legally install it into my
2610? If so do I use his unlock code, or mine?

Thanks

There's plenty of places to get unlock codes / cracks / hacks and protest
versions of Mapsource software off the internet.

I don't recommend piracy - but Garmin's software prices are a wee bit
out to lunch.

Seems to me when a person pays $600.00 for a GPS receiver, they should
get at least a worldmap with it.

As long as there's still an unlock code for it, yes, you can have him
generate a second unlock for your unit and install it.

Thanks for the reply. How does he generate another code? Or is that a
question for garmin?

Thanks

He'll need his original customer code for the 2610. It is on the yellow
slip of paper that was included with his package.

He's referring to loading maps onto a second GPS, not using it in
MapSource. Garmin's hardware locking has not been broken.

No they aren't. They are in fact in line with their largest competitor,
Magellan, and they offer unlocks for two GPS units.

Why is that? I don't remember that last time I needed a world map for
my car navigation system.

You're out of touch. Their prices are brutal. Why do you think
cracksource has been so active in providing workarounds for Mapsource
software?

I don't recommend it, but you can download unlock codes, enhanced
basemaps, city select, roads and recreation, and fishing hotspot install
programs that work very well on your Garmin GPS.

So that means that the rest of us don't? You're a wee bit on the anal
side.

Again, these unlock codes make the product viewable on MapSource. They
DO NOT allow you to use the maps on the GPS. Lock codes for the
GPS are tied to the hardware device ID. Any valid lock code will work
for MapSource, but only a lock code for your specific GPS will allow
you to use the maps on your GPS.

You need a lot more detail for road navigation than would be provided
in a world map. That's why detail map products like City Nav/City Select
exist.

From the Garmin website:
"Your MapSource coupon or registration code is valid for use with your own
Garmin GPS unit. This agreement provides a one-user license, and it is
illegal to share this data with others. If you own multiple unlock
compatible Garmin GPS units and have unlocked maps to one, you are generally
allowed to unlock the same maps to one other compatible Garmin unit you own
for no additional charge."
