That's what I was thinking. There was some chatter on one of these
groups recently about a similar product that is still under development,
the Compal Electronics Palmax GDA (i.e, GPS PDA). But I don't think
I've seen any prices on that yet and don't know when/if it is supposed
to actually hit the market. It is interesting though.

Garmin's stuff is made in Taiwan for the most part, I suppose as they
develop new products they are always facing the prospect of the
developers and makers cloning things off to other brands and cheaper
versions that weaken Garmin's sales.

Maybe what sometimes looks like marketing greed to me is really the
essential survival skill of capitalizing on brand name recognition and
maximizing your profits in that period of time that you have some
exclusivity on the market.

I'm not a Garmin buyer now, I could go that way if I was won over but it
not be with total disregard for price and competing products.
