Author GPS External Antenna Installation

I just bought a magnetic external antenna for my GPS similar to the Garmin
GA 27C.
I've got a Toyota Camry Sedan. How do folks normally run the wire inside?
I've got a long wire and was thinking about running it in through the trunk
and then up to the front seat.
Does anyone have any experience doing something like that? Will it cause a
leak in the trunk?

I've never done a GPS but when I mounted speakers in the trunk I'd take
the wires through one side of the back seat and stuff 'em down between
the end of the seat and the inside of the body. Then under whatever kind
of panels there were on the side of the car. Take of the panels on the
door sills and keep going that way up to the front. Then again, under
whatever panels are on the sides (by where your feet would be) and then
up under the dash to whereever I needed the wires.

I hope I've explained it well enough and if not, I'm sure someone will
correct me. ;-)

Mine is positioned just at the point where the rear of the drivers door
and the front of the back door meet. The cable runs into the back door at
its front and immediately up into and behind the rubber trim, then forward
to the GPS (2610) positioned on top of the dash. It's been there for a
year and hasn't leaked yet, it's only very thin coax.

why don't you try to put it on a metal plate and place it inside the car on
the back dash. then you won't have to run the wire thru a door.

I am an amateur radio operator as well as a GPS user and if you use the
proper mount for the external antenna it should be as water tight as it
was before. If your car has a pop down back seat like hondas do then
running to the trunk is a piece of cake. I usually take the molding off
around were the door meets the car body....most have screws for easy
access and I run the wire through these or under the carpet to the
mounting point. Hood mounting is often eaier as the wire run is not as
long. Most cars have points to run wire through with no drilling.
Sometime poking a hole in a rubber grommet that separates the engine
compartment is very easy and airtight as well. Expect to spend and hour
or two to do a neat, "invisible" installation.
