I`m just trying the Franson GPSgate program, but I can`t get nroute to
pick it up at all from a COM port - are there any small viewer apps that
can display a data stream so I can see if i`m getting any useful output
from the Franson app ?

nroute works fine when i`m picking the signal up in USB mode btw...

Forget that, I found one shortly after posting, and Franson does appear
to be routing some sort of output to whichever port I choose (COM2 in
this instance)

I wonder if nroute *only* works with particular NMEA streams, i.e.
garmin specific...

AFAIK, It's not NMEA or NMEA+Garmin, but NMEA or Garmin.
When the gps is in Garmin-mode it doesn't send NMEA.
Nroute only reads Garmin-mode, not NMEA.

I have an old GPS-35 "mouse", it only sends NMEA; it doesn't work in nroute.

Leif

BTW, an application like the GPSgate, which intercepts the datastream
between gps and mapsource/nroute could be used to exchange the serial# of
the gps with one which matches the unlock key... A skillfull cracker should
be able to do that...
